The Nubee 8580 Dual Laser Infrared Thermometer works great! I believe that the two laser guides are essential when operating the unit, but a user can turn off the laser guides if desired. The laser guides allow a user to easily position the measurement spot on an object or an area of interest. In addition to measuring the temperature of an object, it also allows scanning of an entire surface to check for variations in the temperature. After releasing the trigger for a measurement, the unit "holds" the data for that reading in memory and provides a user the ability to view that reading's maximum temperature, minimum, average, and difference between the maximum and minimum. The unit also allows a user to change to the emissivity factor based on the type of material. The instruction manual provides a table of different objects and the associated emissivity factors. It defaults to 0.95.As noted in P McWhorter's review, the instruction manual leaves a lot to be desired. As this unit is a keeper, I revised the user manual to be much easier to follow. If you are interested in a copy, please let me know.

Amazingly accurate, but don't think you can use it on a job site.
I am a long time weather buff and purchased this to calibrate temperature sensors. I am amazed at its accuracy. I tested it against two known temperatures sources, a high end Netatmo weather sensor (accuracy claimed to .5 of a degree) and the surface temperature of an ice water bath (33 degrees). Both measurements were accurate to within .5 of a degree.Be advised this is for light duty use only. If you drop it on a hard surface there will be a plastic explosion. The included carrying case is of sturdy, firm canvas, with a belt loop, which will provide some protection. A fine buy for the price.Oh yeah, your cats will like it too.

Light weight, but functional
So far this Temperature Gun seems to do the job. I wanted a quick way of periodically checking tire, wheel and bearing temperatures on a two-axle travel trailer. This unit came with its own lightweight case and was one of the lower-cost units I encountered. It is easy to use. Yes, it is lightweight. Yes, I think it will probably come apart as some others have mentioned, if you drop it on the pavement. (I'm not sure other similar units won't also.) My solution is to avoid dropping it. Changing batteries is easy, though the battery compartment door can come off if the technique is ham-fisted. It easily snaps back on. This is a fairly cheap and cheaply-made item. It isn't designed for long-term precision work. However, it works well for my purposes and was easy on the wallet. I've double-checked the readout with other thermometers and it has consistently been within two degrees.

Cheaply Made, Confusing Menus
This infrared temperature gun is definitely a step up from lower end models with only one laser and no max temperature readings, although you can't tell from the device itself, since it is entirely made out of cheap feeling plastic that is brittle to the touch. Compared to my (much cheaper) infrared thermometer without the sensitivity or extra features of this model, this one feels much less durable and significant in the hand. I know that's a weird thing to complain about, but the cheaper thermometer is also much more comfortable to hold for longer periods, and has soft touch plastics all over to make it easier to grip.As far as functionality, this thermometer does a good job, although the interface is convoluted and much more confusing than it needs to be. I suppose as you add features the device necessarily needs to get more complex, but the menu system is a pain to deal with and learning to use all of the functions can take time. In summary, if you just need something to use around the house and it doesn't need to be spot on, a cheaper IR thermometer would probably be a better bet. If you need something more accurate and something with a few more features, check out some of the competitors to this model, maybe they are better made or more comfortable. It does seem to be very accurate from what I've seen so far, but I'm not sure it's worth the money for something that is so poorly made.

Good product.
This device has all the good characteristics of this kind of thermometers and it is cheaper than most of them. I was looking for a DSR of 16:1 to make possible to measure the temperature of smaller objects at more distance, also with two laser beams you can see if the size of the object for the one you are measuring the temperature is bigger than the spot size represented by the distance between the two laser points, so you are measuring the temperature of the object not the ones around. It comes with a bag and battery. It disconnect automatically after 15 secs so it saves battery. You can adjust de emissivity for accurate reading in different materials. I dont see it is made of cheap plastics as others says, so i recommend it.

This is excellent for my needs.
This little guy is perfect for common household needs. I had one before and it died so I was searching for a replacement. I spent over $50 on my prior unit and did a lot of research before settling on this one. This one offers a minimum detected temp, average and maximum plus it locks the temp so you can see it. It has dual lasers that helps keep you aim right on target and a backlight. It does have other features I don't need.I have used this to determine if my intake vents on my central cooling and the exit vents are more than 10degrees apart. This is how you know if your system is working well. I used it to measure tempnofcwatee I heated for my shampooer. My hot water comes out at 120, and the unit can handle 160. So I heated to 160 with this little guy and it made a huge difference in the carpet cleaning efficiency.I will update if needed later.

Great value!
This is a fantastic tool for the price. You'll spend the first couple days messing around with it, pointing it at the sink, then the oven, then the dog. But it's incredibly useful, especially when working with electrical equipment. And you can't beat the price. I'm a big believer in good tools, but some tools you get because you can afford to throw them away. This a tool that will probably get damaged at some point, but you won't lose sleep over it. Just buy another!

You should buy this one
I actually bought a more expensive temperature gun before this one (I can't even remember what brand it was). I always felt like it wasn't very accurate so I thought all temperature guns were like that. Then I bought this gun for my Dad and was amazed at how accurate it was I checked all kinds of stuff from skin to freezers to metal to hot water etc. and it was very accurate. I used a temperature probe to verify the readings. Anyway, it blew the more expensive one out of the water so I bought myself one and now it's all I use.

Make sure you check the battery!!!!
When I inserted the battery and turned it on, the display was very dim. Worse still, when i toggled the laser it would only work on occasion, and would not stay on. And the unit kept revering back to Celsius, and rebooting. I was all set to send it back as junk when I decided to test the battery it came with. 90% dead! Put a new battery in and everything is fine.

This was a great deal. I am an amateur powder coater and needed a temp gun to be able to read the temps of the parts while they cure in my oven. Just point and shoot and up pops the temp on the easy to read LCD screen. I've tested this with other thermometers and it is very accurate. I've been using this for months and I am still on the original battery. It is lightweight yet well made and should last for years.

Works like a charm for a multitude of uses
Works like a charm for a multitude of uses. (Did you know that lame incandescent bulbs can get upwards of 300 degrees or more inside? Makes LED bulbs that much more attractive). But I'd love this even more than 5 stars if my girlfriend didn't keep putting crap away (in drawers, cabinets) to make the house look "perfect." I don't know where half my stuff is anymore. Like a frickin wild goose chase every bloody day of my life. Who needs everything to be so perfect?

Amazing tool with two laser beams!
Amazing tool with two laser beams! It's within 4 degrees of accuracy, but I knew that before the purchase and after lengthy research into the cost of a really accurate infrared thermometer. I use it mostly for temperature differences in the house. Backlit display is nice! My cat likes this tool too!

Good Laser Therm
Good laser therm. I don't have anything to compare it to, as it's the first (and only) laser thermometer I have owned. I bought this model because of the dual laser system (the lasers aren't what actually measure the temp, they are only used as a guide-when the two dots are together, you are measuring from the proper distance to achieve the most accurate results).

Cool gadget, excellent for the price.
Cool gadget and toy, but cheap materials and low build quality (for a $139.99 list price), definitely worth it for these features and price. Also better than a regular laser pointer for playing with cats.Update 11-Oct-2014: Increased from 3 to 4 stars, no issues after a couple months of use several times a week. Used it at the local farmer's market to check temps of coolers, food sitting in direct sunlight, and various surfaces (boredom) - the other vendors liked to play with it too. Used it to check oven temps while baking larger loafs of bread (my oven struggles to maintain anything over ~435F). Used it to check temps on electric motors, PC (case & heat sinks), and more... Cool and useful gadget, build quality is fair for the price.Update 01-Dec-2015: Increased from 4 to 5 stars, because it still works like new, to offset for my underestimating it, and at the reduced price ($22.60 now) its definitely 5 stars, but still probably 3 stars at the full list price ($139.99). Since my last update, it still works like new with regular use a few times a week. During the extreme cold snaps last winter I used it to monitor temps in my hen house, on plumbing, around doors & windows (scan the edges for cold spots), and just to see how surface temps differed at -10F. It saw less usage at the farmer's market, it was a bad year, slow, poor sales, poor harvests, and people playing political power games to edge out other vendors. Used it regularly to check oven temps until the ignitor failed (glow plug type), since replacing it the oven was worked fine. Added price point clarification to the top line of the review and title, without changing the original text.

It's fun to play with
It's fun to play with, but wildly inaccurate. I wouldn't go with this model if you're looking for any degree of accuracy in your temperature readings, and certainly not anything where you'd need to get within .1 degrees. This swings around within 5 degrees of accurate.
