Ideal Security's hydraulic door closers use an oil-filled chamber for the smoothest available mechanism - closing silently every time. The SK5900 is for standard-weight storm and screen doors that weigh between 45 to 90 lbs. It measures 1" in diameter and 10.5" in length. The closing speed of our door closers is adjustable, ensuring that doors shut securely every time. The seasonal adjustment option allows you to swap between the window and the screen on your door. The SK5900 includes all necessary brackets and screws for installation and installs easily using the existing holes on your door (if this was the model on the door previously). To protect your door and the door closer, a storm chain is recommended (model SK14). Ideal Security has been supplying quality hardware to door manufacturers for 65 years. You just need to adjust it for winter months so it shuts faster (still very slow compared to air) and slower in summer months but it's very easy to adjust, just twist the body a different direction. I highly recommend hydraulic closers. They close SO MUCH MORE SMOOTHLY and you can adjust them to close nearly as fast as an air cylinder but it will still be more gentle and smooth. I suspect the people complaining of burst cylinders didn't adjust their doors properly or the close speed or, even more likely, forced the door close when it was set to a slow close speed. Air compresses, liquids don't, so when you force close a door with a liquid you're far more likely to damage it and make it rupture eventually versus air. We'll see how long this will last compared to air ones but even if only half as long (unlikely) it's still worth it. There is such a difference in how the door closes between the two. Review: Great product and half the price - Bought this to replace a closer from a Fox Weldor storm door. Worked perfectly. I will order another for the back storm door

Finally a storm closer that actually is slow from the start
The storm door I've bought from Anderson came with pneumatic (air based) closers which instantly let the door close 80% of the way guaranteeing an ankle strike. The most popular replacement on Amazon does EXACTLY the same thing despite showing a video of it not doing that. I bought one, got it replaced under warranty and both have almost no impact on the first 80% of close. This is a limitation of pneumatic door closers. This hydraulic (fluid based) door close only quick closes about 10% and then SLOW closes the rest of the way which is how it is supposed to work.

Leaks oil in less than a week
I was really hoping this would work better than the air type closers that never seem to work right. I've had it installed for less than a week and it seemed to work really well, closing smoothly and quietly with full closure in a few seconds. But now, I see a pool of oil on the floor below the end near the door attachment and find that end of the unit is dripping with oil. I'm sure frustrated with buying ones that don't work even when new and now, one that works will soon fail due to this leak. I'm now out the cost of two air type units and now this oil type unit ... all in just a couple weeks. Who makes one that will last years ... not just days!!??

I love this one!!! easy to adjust!! not screwdriver needed. adjust as needed right then!
Love the new adjustment control from the old kinds where u needed a screwdriver. Now you just turn it with your fingers right then n there! no fuss! Love that! Works as intended and perfectly. Now my door glides nicely to close and won't catch the kids or puppies fingers/faces!

So much better than pneumatic
Our storm door had a pneumatic closer that was much to fast on the initial part of its swing. It would hit a slow spot and close gently, but the initial swing speed was much to fast. This hydraulic closer is way better. It has a steady closing speed. I wish I would have bought this years ago. I also wish Amazon had a better search function because there is no way to filter out pneumatic results.
