Antarctica: The Waking Giant

A beautiful book.
This is a truly beautiful book with lots of interesting information about Antarctica. It supplemented my recent visit to the peninsula and expanded my understanding of the continent. Sobering information about climate change. I will refer to it in a discussion of Antarctica with my retirement group. Terrific photography.

A mesmerizing montage of magnificent images, and a wake-up call for all
This book is at once travelogue, an adventure story, an amazing portfolio of images, and an urgent call to action. Like most coffee-table books this one is filled with images - but unlike most coffee-table books, this one should be read cover to cover. It is as if Sir Ernest Hemmingway, Sir Ernest Shackleton and Sir Donald McCullin had all collaborated on a publication. But Sebastian Copeland is Hemmingway, Shackleton and McCullin all wrapped up in one unique person-writer, photographer, explorer, educator. Unlike the sirs however, Copeland (who is a sir in his own right, having been knighted into the French National Order of Merit) cares deeply and is concerned about the places he explores - Earth's polar regions. The images and his words reflect a passion for a planet that is on the brink of catastrophic change as a result of unbridled and uncaring industrialization. This book is a wonderful documentation of a place few get to experience, and it is a wake-up call for all.

Stunning collection of images and thought provoking essays on the power and fragility of Antarctica.
Antarctica, The Waking Giant, by Sebastian Copeland is a gorgeous collection of sublime images and thoughtful writing that communicate the fragile state our planet and Antarctic region are in. The book is beautifully printed and hardcover bound with substantial weight. The images are extraordinary in their ability to transport the viewer to this remote and rarely travelled region of our Earth. The photography imbues the viewer with the technique and craft of an expert with its use of wide angles, decisive moments, powerful depth of field and zone system exposures. It is well suited as a thought provoking coffee table book amongst any design environment. One is left with a sense of responsibility at the magnitude of our planet’s situation, while also providing a ray of hope for its delicate future. Looking forward to more works by this artist.

A very beautiful and informative book on Antarctica
Teeming with beautiful photographs taken by Copeland on his arduous crossings of Antarctica, which included reaching "the pole of inaccessibility" the remotest spot on Antarctica where surreally there stands a bust of Lenin. But also the written word that accompanies them describes in an easily readable way he physical nature of Antarctica, the history of its exploration, and the climate change it is undergoing.

A truly beautiful book
This is a beautiful book, both inside and outside. It is extremely well bound and printed, and contains copious photographs in beautiful color. It is large format and would make a wonderful gift for anyone interested in nature/wildlife or photography. My only (minor) reservation is that the picture captions are gathered at the end of the book and do not appear with the individual photographs.

Powerful beautiful insightful imagery
Bought this book for my 12 year old who dreams of visiting Antarctica one day. Beautiful representation of the dramatic majesty of the landscape while at the same time capturing the sweet glimpses of wildlife. Also included is quite insightful and educational information about glaciers and climate crisis.

Not what i was hoping
I really wanted to like this book, but it is kind of dull. The photographer travelled all over Antarctica, but it comes across as boring.I also found some of the wildlife photos disturbing. The photographer was way too close the the subjects.Printing is OK to good. You want to see glaciers? Look up a book called "Ice" , by Bolag

A fantastic read and amazing photography
I've been very pleased with this purchase because of how well it captures the elements of the Arctic, and the need to tell that story more now than ever. Brilliant visuals and commentary from a master explorer and story teller. It's going to be the center piece of the coffee table for certain. Fabulously well done.

Stunning!
I bought this book as a 70th birthday present for a friend who would love to visit Antarctica. It's been a great success. I'd wanted a peak before I wrapped it, but it was so well wrapped in plastic that I decided not to disturb it. Now I have to wait!

Eloquent writing and powerful photos
This book is a perfect match between text and images. I deeply enjoyed the way the author narrates early expeditions and the future of Antarctica. Photos are very powerful. We smell the perfumes of ice, the icebergs seem alive. Highly recommended!

Environmental
The attractions in this book are many, in the form of dynamic photographs and in word by the author true-life experiences. ANTARCTICA is a survey of memorable moments made by SEBASTIAN COPELAND, new age explorers, and environmentalists. Copeland brings the reader where many of todays readers will never get to see. WHY? the planet's climates are no longer what can be expected and quickly altering. Copeland with his new book puts us the reader on our feet; how much longer can the derelict attitudes and behaviors be endured; the awareness lays in this book. A must-read.

BRILLIANT BOOK!
This has been one of my best purchase this year. The images and quality allow a complete immersion in Copeland's world and most importantly in the amazing land of Antartica.
