We NEED this Legend!
Carmen Deedy wrote this book in a way that communicates the legend of King Christian X of Denmark very well to young readers. The beautiful illustrations by Henri Sorensen completely underscores the message. I'm so grateful that Peachtree Press published this book with such attention to quality! The book needs to be in EVERY school library and READ to children. We would have a Better World, I'm quite sure!

Awesome book!
Cute book! I love this story. Wheather it is true or not, it has a great message. My dad is a Dane, and even though he was a young boy during the war, he remembers the Nazi occupation. He has told us stories of the German army maching down the street in his hometown. Pride of country runs deep for the Danes. This book, whether fictional or not, depicts that perfectly!

May not be true, but ...
There is no proof this story is true, but it has been passed down through the years as fact. It's a story about the kind of leader you always want to serve, who is thoughtful, intelligent, and loves his people. This is a great short story to use in the study of WWII and 6th grade history.

People are way to bent out of shape over this book.
The cover says its a Legend so those whom complain it is not fact are ignoring the fact. Legends play an important part of the psyche of a nation. This is of coarse fiction but all legends have a bit of truth and it is true that the Danes lost a smaller percentage of Jews than most countries in WW2. A great conversation book! I am enjoying it with my Gr 5-8 class.

Wish it were true, but the lesson of ingenuity - what could we do another time - is inspiring
I have read the negative reviews of those who point out that the story is not true, and I too wish the story as written were true. However, I personally, cannot compare it to Number the Stars, which is also excellent, because they are different types of books for an entirely different audience. For younger children, particularly, this short, simple, beautiful story of the commitment of the Danish King and people to protect and save the Jewish countrymen from Nazi persecution is inspiring and lovely. It's a favorite book of ours for the spirit of the story, and the unspoken challenge - what if we all chose to stand beside others to protect them and their freedoms, even at risk to our own lives? It isn't in the book, but it's the thought that always follows for me. This is a story of finding a creative solution to a horrific, threatening problem. It is the story of the commitment of a nation to protect all of its people. Those lessons are beautiful, and definitely historically accurate to the spirit of the Danes in WW2, though the details are not consistent with fact.

Choose Wisdom not War
This book clearly illustrates how Wisdom can overcome War; it states the same principal as Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
