Bloodline: Five Stories
K**R
Bloodline by Mr. Gaines
These were my first short stories by Mr. Ernest Gaines. They are all set in his writing comfort zone in rural Louisiana. All of his books are done in the old Southern Negro dialect. My kindle reader had a hard time with some of the words and expressions.Otherwise, the stories are vintage Gaines. They tell of family, poverty, religion, racial bias and just "hard times" living while black in the rural, segregated South. He also does a wonderful job of dealing with generational family issues. These stories speak of siblings, parents and grandparents interactions as they grapple with the societal and social issues of the day. They demonstrate the true meaning of "It Takes a Village......".If you like other Gaines books, I trust that you will not be disappointed with these five short stories.Walter M.South Carolina

Definitely Worth Reading Gaines
Excellent stories in this series by Gaines. This writer was recommended to me by a friend. I will definitely read more of his stories. He writes from the perspective of a black person experiencing segregation and does so in a way that is vivid but not angry.

Master of the Long Short Story
Ernest J. Gaines must be acknowledged as one of the masters of the long short story. In Bloodline he is in top form. In the few pages each story encompasses, Gaines reveals a world many of us have never seen--the world of poor black people only a few decades ago. His characters are realistic, deftly drawn, and full of surprising depth. His language is the language of the people, and it rings true. If you don't read anything else this year, read "Bloodline" and "A Long Day in November" from this collection.

Gaines an acquired taste.
I loved this book. It did a wonderful job of expressing the interactions between family members during troublesome times. Of course, I think his books should be required reading for everyone. :-)
