I’ve always had good luck with Stanley Lombardo, and he did right by yet another ancient epic here. I much prefer this to any other translations I’ve read. In clear, rhythmic verse, Lombardo captures both the existential struggles of the hero — his yearnings for friendship and meaning that we can all identify with — and its strange, alien feel. At the core of this ancient, ancient tale lies a beating human heart.

The additional features by Gary Beckman help make this slim volume and powerful and useful new translation. As a high school English teacher, I would not hesitate to use this version in my own classroom.
