God Bless America

Bobcat and Murray put a mirror, a satirical one, to 'America's Face' and let us laugh at all the silly 1st world issues and people who somehow survived childhood. They explore some dark areas we all think about when confronted with these people, and hopefully people who act the way the victims do will learn to be kinder or at least human beings.

This movie, directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, is action pact accompanied by dark humor and a pinch social commentary. The acting is superb, everyone hits their mark. The humor is dark, with many many laugh out loud moments (if you are into this kind of thing.) Think- Leon: The Professional directed by Judd Apatow. Fantastic. And that opening scene....The uh... packaging was great, quality amazing, yeah yeah. All that was good too.

Once every not-so-often, I come across a movie that hits me like a punch in the face. Everything about it rings true – the script is full of zingy one-liners, the cast knows what they’re doing and it feels like this thing was made for a very good reason. This happens once in a blue moon. In this case, I’m going to tell you about a little movie I just watched called “God Bless America”.Frank Murdoch (Joel Murray) is a normal guy. He’s divorced, and his daughter is a little whiny brat, very much the product of her environment. Frank sits on his couch every night, trying to find something good on television. He sees the disgusting behavior glorified on singing and mean-girl reality shows. The problem is that this country eats this stuff up like it’s candy. People can’t get enough of their dumb entertainment and famous-for-being-famous celebutards. Frank finds out he has a massive brain tumor and will likely die soon. He considers suicide, but ultimately goes on a rampage to kill all of the stupid people wasting space on this good Earth. Likeminded teenager Roxie (Tara Lynne Barr) eventually joins forces with him, and they become a team devoted to making the world a better place, one murder at a time.With all of the mass-shootings and equally disgusting violent crime depicted on the local news every day, it’s obvious that a film this honest and cynical might not be for everyone. It glorifies violence, but at the same time it doesn’t. It is not a film of ideas, but a film of reactions. If you fall outside of the bell curve of American people who love trash culture, you might really enjoy this movie. In the back of your head, you may have wondered all along, “what would happen if someone just killed these idiots once and for all?”Another thing that makes this film remarkable to me is that it’s full of unknown actors, and yet it features two of the most memorable performances in recent memory. Murray is perfectly cast as the everyman who has simply had enough already, and Barr brings a whole lot of fun to the table. This movie will make neither of these people stars, because it’s so gloriously politically incorrect, and will likely not be accepted by the masses.“God Bless America” is a scathing satire with a gaping hole where its heart should be. It doesn’t need a heart, for it has a brain. It’s a sobering and perceptive statement on where we stand as a culture at this point in time. Even though this movie is a few years old, it feels as if it was made yesterday. It could be dismissed as left-wing propaganda, because sometimes it does get a bit heavy-handed with the political side (a Glenn Beck type is brutally murdered), it provides a point of view that isn’t biased, because in some way, we all kind of relate to Frank. If you find yourself on the couch looking for something to watch on Netflix, give God Bless America a try. It’ll give you plenty to laugh about, but a lot more to think about.Grade: A+

I like Bobcat Goldthwait. He's smart, he's funny, and he's opinionated. I like all of those things, and even when I disagree with him, I still like seeing what he's up to whether it be in stand up or directing a new movie. As a writer and director Goldthwait has improved dramatically over the years, and this is a very well made movie that is an impressive creative achievement, even though I do quibble with one of its premises. As Bobcat explains in one of the (excellent) extras, the film is about "a liberal with a gun" and is "a call for kindness." I agree with him on both accounts, and appreciate the fight Goldthwait wages against rampant materialism, societal ugliness and irresponsibility, and narcissism. These are completely valid targets for a satire and wry cultural commentary, and Bobcat excels at skewering these excesses mostly through the technique of mocking reality shows which here are thinly disguised counterparts of actual televised atrocities (e.g. "American Superstarz.")The protagonists, Frank (Joel Murray) and Roxy (Tara Lynne Barr) have had enough with society and take out miscreants one jerk at a time in a wicked killing spree. Most of this is directed against reality star Chloe, her awful family, and the like, but the added theme is that the political right is a key underpinning of the lack of civility with typical xenophobia and oil company propaganda masquerading as genuine political positions and news stories with captions like "Tea Party Members Assault Parkinson's Sufferer." I would be curious how many of the producers in Hollywood behind the reality shows he skewers so well are Fox News acolytes. (I'm guessing none.) I am not defending the likes of Sean Hannity here (he can defend himself just fine, and I haven't watched him since Alan Colmes left,) but I guess Bobcat missed Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthew's venom over the last decade or so. Bobcat is welcome to make any political point he wishes of course (it's his movie,) but it's fair to point out the philosophical disconnect that if he's arguing that reality shows and popular culture are making the US a meaner country (I believe they are and completely agree with the premise, by the way,) he is blaming the wrong side of the political fence for this problem, rendering the plea in the film that "there's no right or wrong" anymore moot. In the film's climax Frank makes a valid criticism that "America has become a cruel and vicious place. We reward the shallowest, the dumbest, the meanest, and the loudest." That is completely true on reality television, and as I have stated I think it's not only to the key to the film, it's a genuine societal concern. What gets lost in this vision though is that reality television isn't reality.Having explained my philosophical differences with the film let me tell you why I liked it. It's extraordinarily well acted and directed. Camera work is excellent throughout, and the ambience of the film makes the characters sympathetic despite their deeply sociopathic crimes. Although I don't agree with all his positions, I do think Goldthwait's "call for kindness" (as odd as that may sound given the context) is brilliantly written and makes excellent points about American pop culture; I'm glad he made them, as he can do so with more nuance than most. The extras are also superior: the interviews are golden with a few hidden gems emerging: see Bobcat explain why "Oliver Stone has the sense of humor of a Vulcan," and why he wants to get a merkin for his eyebrows, among many other humorous diversions.This movie will not be for everyone, but if you loathe reality television and have no objection to satirical violence with a point, I recommend it to all open-minded viewers.

A movie that is brave enough to show what is wrong with America, and in Canada as well as the world! When people are only famous for being talentless, rude, narcissistic, inconsiderate, making sex tapes which are "accidentally released" or travelling with millions of dollars worth of tasteless jewelry and the list is too long to list, but you get the idea. When you have 100+ channels of TV and truly nothing is worth watching, when your neighbour is a self-centered jackass, and all you see these days entitlement of brats, with no manners or discipline this movie shines about our daily situations. It is a parody of course, yet it is also a true reflection of current affairs. The langue in the movie is X-rated, but very appropriate, because it just reflect reality.

Una película estupenda, digna de comprar para poder ver mil y un veces. Necesaria para cualquier colección de cine. No os lo penséis.

von: bluray-dvd-kritiken.tumblr.comZUM FILM:Ich selbst verabscheue die meisten TV-Formate in Deutschland, die zum Großteil aus den USA kommen und kann die Abneigung die im Film deutlich wird gut verstehen.Natürlich hat Frank auch noch andere Schicksalsschläge die ihn zu seinen Taten führen, da wurde die volle Bandbreite eingebaut: Frau weg, Kind will ihn nicht sehen, Job verloren, Hirntumor.Das TV-Programm ist dann eben nur noch der Tropfen der das Fass zum überlaufen bringt und so zieht er los und „räumt auf“.Dabei schließt sich ihm Roxy an, die allerdings mehr aus wahllosem Hass töten will, während Frank eine strickte Vorstellung hat, die er versucht ihr beizubringen.Er vermisst den Anstand, die Nächstenliebe und auch Intelligenz in unserer Gesellschaft. Genau das ist auch die Hauptaussage des Films.Wir lassen uns durch oberflächlichen Müll unterhalten, meist auf Kosten anderer ohne zu merken das wir ihnen damit schaden, solange sich damit Geld verdienen lässt…Aber eines darf man bei diesem Film nicht vergessen: Es ist eine Comedy-Satire!Bobcat Goldthwait will niemanden auffordern zur Waffe zu greifen, sondern er wollte uns den Spiegel vorsetzen und zeigen was falsch läuft in der Gesellschaft. Das eben im Gewand aus Gewalt und Komik.Somit kann man auch über die Morde lachen, weil jeder „solche Leute“ kennt die einen mit ihrem Verhalten nerven.Auch interessant ist, dass die Beziehung zwischen Frank und Roxy öfters aufgegriffen wird bzw das die Möglichkeit besteht das es etwas Ernsteres wird. In welchem Kontext das zum Hauptthema steht ist schwer zu erkennen, vielleicht wollte der Regisseur auch nur den Zuschauer dazu bringen es zu verurteilen falls es dazu kommt. Vielleicht soll es auch einfach nur etwas Abwechslung und Spannung reinbringen. Avec sept participations dans des festivals et aucun prix jusqu’à là, God Bless America n’a à priori rien d’une sensation. Sans doute pas assez sérieux pour convoiter un prix dans des festivals rarement favorables à des oeuvres trop ironiques, God Bless America devrait sans doute finir sa carrière comme petite série B décalée mais inoffensives qu’on se passe entre potes dans une soirée télé-pizza. C’est dommage car c’est se méprendre sur les intentions, l’ambition et la qualité d’un vrai film générationnel qui raconte la société hyper-médiatique et les angoisses adolescentes d’aujourd’hui.Remonté contre l’idiotie et la méchanceté contemporaine, God Bless America imagine un quadragénaire dépressif et une adolescente atypique embarqués dans un road-movie sanguinaire, tuant les crétins et les égoïstes qui se dressent sur leur passage, chassant les candidats de télé-réalités insupportables et les politiciens haineux. Pour peu qu’on aime l’humour noir, l’idée sadique du film paraît géniale mais c’est aussi une idée difficile à mettre en scène parce qu’on aurait vite fait de se limiter à un enchaînement de morts sordides et bêtes. C’est sans compter sur le talent et la lucidité du réalisateur Bob Goldthwait qui dépasse très vite les limitations d’une simple série B violente et décalé pour faire de God Bless America un film rock à part entière. Drôle et provocateur, le film n’en est en effet pas pour autant léger, c’est au contraire le cris de colère et de désespoir de deux marginaux dépassés par leur monde et désespérément seuls dans leurs univers respectifs.Bob Goldthwait choisit de mettre en parallèle deux mondes ou plutôt deux crises, celle de l’adolescence à travers l’expérience de Roxy interprété par l’impertinente Tara Lynn Barr à côté de qui Chloé Moretz en Hit-girl dans Kick-ass semble un personnage bien fade, et celle de la quarantaine à travers l’expérience de Frank incarné par un Joel Murray, éternel second rôle finalement très bon en tête d’affiche. Soit deux acteurs et deux personnages qui n’ont pas les mêmes références mais qui parlent le même langage lorsqu’ils échangent pendant de longues minutes sur le monde, leur vie et tout le reste. C’est alors l’occasion d’apprécier les talents impressionnants de dialoguiste de Goldthwait et le jeu complice de Tara Barr et Joel Murray "crachant" pêle-mêle sur le système, Juno, la télé-réalité, la France, Woody Allen et Alice Cooper. Des dialogues toujours brillants, pertinents et hilarants entre-coupés de scènes où les personnages listent tous ce qu’ils détestent dans ce monde, des représentant des tea-party à ceux qui font des high-fives, et de scène où ils s’entraînent au tir sur des ours en peluche. Les meurtres et autre scènes d’actions sont finalement rares et ce sont véritablement ces temps calmes là qui constituent le coeur du film. God Bless America est avant tout un film cultivé qui s’apprécie grâce à son vrai-faux couple bavard.Oui, au fond God Bless America est une histoire d’amour amorale qui hésiterait presque entre la romance et l’histoire de famille. Il y a d’un côté l’énergie et les vannes des couples d’une rom-com et de l’autre la complicité presque père-fille d’un homme que sa vraie fille déteste et d’une fille qui se sent incomprise par ses parents. Ambigüe, le film interroge avec ironie et intelligence les conventions et les certitudes d’un homme qui tout en s’en prenant à l’hyper-sexualisation de son époque prend conscience de ses propres faiblesse et de son attirance improbable pour une adolescente qui lui ressemble. Une relation hors norme que Goldthwait dénoue le temps d’un final drôle et touchant qui rend un bel hommage à Bonnie & Clyde.Malin et critique jusqu’au bout, God Bless America réussit son pari parce que son réalisateur n’a pas l’arrogance de survoler son monde de haut. Ses deux personnages, fous, et violents sont avant tout lancés dans une quête d’eux même qui passe par l’acceptation de leur anormalité et par celle, plus compliqué, de leurs propres limites. God Bless America est alors un vrai film rebelle qui, sans jamais se trahir, parvient à poser un regard aussi intelligent que drôle sur l’Amérique. C’est drôle, touchant, audacieux, particulièrement bien écris et résolument moderne!
