Backpackers don't try a different sock for first time on a long trip
These are the most confortable socks. However I bought these 'heavy crew' for a week long backpacking trip in the Grand Canyon thinking they'd be more cushiony when ive been using the lighter weight Smart Wool socks and had broken in my boots with the lighter socks. These will work well for people who are used to thicker socks or with my mountaineering boots. It was a mistake on my part to get the new heavy crews for the first time on a long trip ... but after my trip and a blister on my arch from the friction of a thicker sock than I'm used to, I been wearing these around like slipper socks or with my crocs. So comfy. I'm sticking with the lighter weight smart wool socks for my regular hiking boots. But it was my mistake so not sure it's fair to lower a point, especially when these socks are so comfortable for other uses I don't regret buying them now that my trip is over and im using them for other things other than with my regular hiking boots. Smart wool always makes high quality socks. Just need to choose the right kind for your specific use. As a backpacker/hiker/mountaineer I should have known better.

Pure merino in a sock is a mistake
+Very warm+Cushy+Tall enough for my ankle boots (Timberland boondocks)I recently got a merino blend shirt and man that stuff works for cold. I thought more would be better and sure enough, these pure merino socks are very warm. But lacking a synthetic in the blend, they immediately started to fray after just a week and pilled after a wash. DO NOT MACHINE WASH. Also, buy something with a more durable blend. These also aren't very stretchy and are long in the toes. This made a weird deal where the socks stick to my boot insides and not to me, and then they chafe some when I move and I got a blister. Make sure you get the smallest size that will fit... and don't get pure merino for socks. There are a lot of these luxury wool people, and some of them sell blends. I am going to try the Minus33 socks with a bit of polyester and spandex in them and report back...... sometime...

Love these socks! Never actually get what I order though
First off, these socks are great! Very comfortable, durable, and though pricey, I've not ever regretted buying them. I probably have 25 pairs of these things. However, when I order them, it's always a bit of a grabbag as to what I'll actually receive. For instance, in this latest order I tried to get 5 large grey socks. What I got was 2 XL red/grey socks, 2 L (1 grey, 1 red/grey), and 1 M grey sock. WTF?I literally go back to the same exact Amazon link to buy a set of them...and they always come as a random selection of color and sizes.

Another once great product ruined
I have owned Smartwool socks for many years. I didn't need replacements until recently. What I found was a "new" sewing style where they bunched extra fabric on top and at the end of the toe area. Totally unwearable for me. I am extremely disappointed.

Tried and true
I've been wearing these hiking socks inside my boots for ages. They offer the cushioning, breathability, warmth and wicking of wool ragg, but without the annoying thickness and without the scratching. They're properly constructed with a heel and toe, too, so they are not like sticking your foot down a capped tube.Once you properly break in a pair of properly-fitting boots wearing these socks, they will last forever - I am up to 20 years on a pair of Raichle alpine hiking boots I bought at REI in 1995 with two pair of these Smartwool socks. One of the pairs of socks is starting to wear out - few thousand miles on it - so I bought a replacement, hence this review!

These are excellent, heavy duty socks
These are excellent, heavy duty socks. As a diabetic, I need to take careful care of my feet. While special "diabetic" socks are available, I've found that good quality "hiking" socks are as good or better than the special kind. These Merino (a kind of sheep) wool socks are very soft, and in the heavy duty type are fairly thick, helping keep my feet warm. I wear them year round, but they're particularly nice in the winter, when dealing with colder weather. In the summer, the wool is very good had drawing moisture away from the feet, so they are not unpleasant and "hot" feeling.

Great socks!
Soft. Cushiony. It fits as I expected. I wore them throughout out recent vacation (several pairs) and they did help. My feet are not made for walking but these do help cushion and protect my self-inflicted walking wounds. I have bought several pairs now and will buy again.April 2018: Just returned from a vacation in Paris. Wore these socks everyday with my Merrill hiking shoes. I lasted 5 days without blisters! This is an incredible miracle for me! I usually have blisters within 1 day, 2 at the tops. And, my blisters this time were minimal. I give credit to these heavy, cushioned socks. I just purchase 2 more pair. They are soft and heavy cushioned. Perfect for me.

Smartwool socks are a very smart buy!
I purchased this item for myself. I love them, they are so warm and comfy. They are quite thick but I have worn them under my winter boots, garden boots and ice skates with no problem. Due to the thickness of these socks they add quite a bit of comfort to all of them.I wear a size 7 women's shoe and they are just a bit too large, I think I will order the smaller size too. The size I purchased, meduim, fits women's shoe size 7-8 1/2, so I am at the lower end of this size according to the Smartwool company's website. My husband wears a side 8 1/2 men's shoe (which is the upper end of this socks fit) so I may pass these (unisex socks) on to him, I think they will fit. If not, no problem, they do fit me well enough that I will definitely wear them, I was just thinking he would love a pair too!http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000UZDB1U?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00

Oooooh they feel sooooo good :) Best merino socks on the planet.
I used these for years then tried Yuedge (made for tiny feet) and Danish Endurance (not much merino in them really) to save a few pounds, but it was a false economy. Once I got another pair of Smartwool, I could see there was no comparison and my feet are kept at a nice temperature year round, no smells or noticeable sweat and just so very very comfortable. I you are buying Merino socks, always check the actual content of merino wool, as many have only 50% or less and the rest is synthetic garbage. I bought the Smartwool heavy hiking socks and also the Smartwool Indestructawool versions for work in steel toe boots and they rock. Yes, very expensive, so I bought two pairs every payday this year and binned all my other socks at the end. Your feet are worth it. (Yuedge LMAO at those plasticky socks...you know they pay ppl for good reviews right!)

4 x pairs and no issues with quality.
These socks are top quality and provide great warmth and comfort when out hiking. Even when my boots failed and let in a tonne of water they kept everything warmer than expected. NO BLISTERS either which has been a great bonus. If you have size UK8 feet, order the Medium size instead of the size chart suggested Large - if you do order large you will have to try your best to shrink them, which I have actually found quite difficult - Another bonus!

Expensive, but worth it.
Christ, these are like wearing fluffy clouds on your feet.I've huge calves, so need to fold them down to my ankle but when I do so, it feels like I'm wearing the softest of soft booties, and they mould to my wide feet easily, and I just absolutely love wearing them.If these socks were a woman, they'd be Gillian Anderson level greatness. They're that lovely.

Not finished off properly inside so cause rubbing
Socks arrived very quickly, feel great in walking boots except badly finished off inside so if the end of the yarn is in wrong place then rubbing occurs so extremely uncomfortable, in fact one pair so bad I won’t wear and haven’t tried all of them. If these socks were finished correctly they would be fantastic - ok for little dog walk but wouldn’t go miles - sad as they are great socks.

Super-Comfortable and Excellent Socks
I do a lot of walking and use professional walking boots. These socks are one of the msot comfortable I've ever worn, whether out walking or pottering about the house. They keep your feet warm on cooler days and, I always find this strange, they keep your feet cool on warmer days! They are admittedly an indulgence when it comes to socks, but they worth it.For the comfort, warmth in winter, cooling in summer and general wear (I've had mine 6 months and they look like new) I think these are great value for money. Most of the time you get what you pay for, and these are heaven on your feet!
