A phenominal teacher!
For starters, let me assure you, there is NO ONE out there more musically hopeless than me! I used to think some of those method books were just B-grade rejects from the science fiction section. (A Dominat 7th chord? Man, you're just makin' up chords now!) I bought tons of books on scales, licks, methods, theory ... you name it. I tried to work through them, but they just never made any sense. But when I stumbled onto Fretboard Mastery, I finally had that "A-ha!" moment. (By that, I meant to evoke the image of the lightbulb clicking on. My apologies to those upon whom I inflicted flashbacks of that vile eighties band.)I think the truth with most teachers is that teaching is not their passion. They know the subject matter already, and they want to get right to the more nuanced material, the things that are still interesting to THEM. While that is great for advanced students, the rookies get left behind because the teacher doesn't want to be held back to the student's level. And I think that is the key to Troy's success - he is able to relate to the new student. It's like he has never forgotten what it was like when he was still learning the basics. All of the illustrations in the book are accompanied by explanations that are precise and well-expressed. Chord diagrams that I always mistook for Egyptian Hieroglyphics, actually make sense. I can finally see how the pieces fit together. And while I am still a long way from true fretboard mastery, I can at least see the big picture from where I am now, and I finally have a roadmap to the destination. For the first time, I can see real progress. In short, buy this book! And anything else that Troy Stetina writes (I have them all, and there isn't a bad one in the bunch). He is a truly gifted musician and teacher. You will find the presentation thorough, well-explained and digestable. In my opinion, no one does it better. This book has made a HUGE difference in my playing. And if it worked for me, it can't NOT work for you! Thanks a million Troy! Now if I could just convince you to write one of these for the BLUES ...

A MUST FOR SOLID GUITAR THEORY AND PROPER MUSICAL TERMS!!!
This book is a no nonsense foundation for learning the guitar neck!!Troy Stetina's book Fretboard Mastery lives to its name title!...follow the books instruction, and musical terms, then the exercises, learn those three things and you will be well on your way!!i admit He has songs that I haven't learned in the book,..however with the instruction, proper and correct musical terms, and the exercises through out the book, would cost hundreds of dollars and valuable time to learn otherwise!!Truy Stetina's FretBoard Mastery is the guitar book of Guitar Books in my honest opinion! This Book is the Stuff!!

Awesome. Buy all the books you can in these series.
Troy Stetina definitely comes through again with this book. Combined with Speed Lead Mechanics this method of learning guitar is comprehensive. A complete beginner who is willing to put in the amount of time required using Troys books ( ie. lead and rhythm primer-speed lead mechanics--lead rhythm 1 & 2 and Fretboard mastery) will gain a high level of musical fluidity and technical mastery of the instrument. A friend of mine started with lead mechanics when he was a 16 and by the time he was 18 he was shredding and winning guitar war competitions and drawing crowds at music stores when he jammed. He is now in his thirties and is an excellent musician and approaching being a virtuoso. These books are for any style and not limited to rock.

Do you want to be better??
Troy Stetina is a master instructor with an insatiable passion for music and guitar knowledge. The way Troy covers the topics in this book is no fluff but he doesn't skimp on important information or over-simplify. Anybody who slows down and takes the time to make sure they fully grasp even some of the concepts covered here will find themselves a VASTLY improved guitarist. With the help of a good private teacher to keep me accountable of course..heh..

Things like Consonance vs Dissonance
A very thick book with tons of information.Things like Consonance vs Dissonance. I have a friend that went to GIT and whenever he gets technical in discussion he might as well be a wind talker to me. I would assume that if you can make it through this book you could understand what he is saying. I am just nibbling at this book so far with the hope of getting through it in a year. Someday I hope to be able to do a follow up analysis.

Guitar fretboard’s deep review
Excellent but very theoretical presentation of the fretboard. This was a little bit suprise for me. I expected more practical presentation. Nevertheless, a fine book as such.

FretBoard Mastery
WOW! This is a tome. Thick, almost intimidating in the amount of material this covers. Since I have only barely started with this book, it will probably takes years to absorb it all. If I can get down 1/10 of this information, I should be able to expand my knowledge immensely. One note of warning about Try Stetina books, they start off fast. I consider myself to be an intermediate guitarist (advanced beginner?), his books are not for the non-dedicated. Be prepared to work for your gains.

This is one of if not the best books on Fretboard and basically music theory
This is one of if not the best books on Fretboard and basically music theory. A must-have for at the very least guitarists. It discusses different aspects of notes, scales, intervals, ... and much more.I have all of Troy's books. In my opinion, this is his best book.

Hard and Dry
I dusted off this book from a drawer I'd stashed it in and forgotten about some eight years after I purchased it. I looked inside and saw that I'd diligently pencilled in answers to exercises on the first twenty five or so pages. I looked over them again and realised that I hardly remembered a single thing about what I'd learned, and here's why...The author clearly knows his stuff, but I think it's one thing to have great knowledge, but a completely different thing to be able to impart that knowledge, to engage and inspire others with that knowledge and to share it in a way that's addictive and fun. This book is essentially a series of examples, often accompanied by audio clips from the accompanying CD, tab, notation and sometimes written exercises. BUT, it's kind of like: here's this, here's that, try this, try that, with often quite terse and dry explanations. And there seems to be no overarching game plan or sense of reward or achievement or feeling of how what's just been said will apply to your own development, and for me it lacked any pay-off or fun, and became, well, a bit boring.Having said that I realise people learn in different ways, so this style of book might suit some, especially the already advanced player (I wouldn't advise using it exclusively if you're a beginner), but for me I like to feel the sense of a journey, of taking small steps with quantifiable goals, which is where things like jam tracks are great to see if you can apply what you've learned and break up the monotony of learning by rote.So in summary I would say this is kind of an enhanced reference book, with lots of little examples and would work great with some other resources such as an online course, another more accessible book or a real teacher. But on it's own as the be all and end all of fretboard mastery - it falls short.

Incredible Book, that all guitarists should own !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
This book is a must for every guitarist that wants to take their playing to another level.Could be the best single book on making you a better guitarist / musician there is !YES ITS THAT GOOD !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Get this book if you play guitar & do it step by step ( take your time with it, so it feels easy ) & you'll be amazed with how far you've come by the end.I've had this book for quite some time ( about a year or so ) & can hear / sing the sound of every note before I play it. That is not shown in any book I've ever seen before this one. The skill you will learn within this book in just incredible.

Incorrect tracking information & no CD
This was bought as a gift so I assume the book is as good as described in other reviews but the book no longer appears to come with a CD but rather an online access code which may prove problematic when practicing in the garden shed which has power but no internet! So mid-described.Additionally, the tracking information supplied was incorrect in that it was stated as by FEDEX but wasn’t. I have spent time complaining to FEDEX which was not warranted.

Excellent
The basics are this: Its well written the knowledge is broad and deep and the CD is good.If you have some music theory knowledge (be it studied separately or because you are an intermediate guitar player (or better) and want to understand the guitar thoroughly this book is great. It's an ordered study into everything about guitar knowledge/theory that anyone who is really into the instrument could ever want.BUT it's difficult, demanding and requires significant study (not just reading but doing); probably for years. If that hasn't put you off and in fact piques your interest you really do want this book.

great worth every penny
what a book at some point or other the time comes when you need to learn a little musical theory and this is an excellent book for learning that. mind you do not think that you can just pick it up read through and its done, though possibly some people can but i am not one. its a case of reading in sections following the instructions, picking up and putting down if you like. its certainly not a weekend read it takes time but all the information you could ever want and more is included in a precise and well thought out format.i personally still haven't fully mastered the guitar but that is more a failing of my talent not the books. i am sure that this book will tell you everything that you could wish to know worth every penny
