A Film Worthy of Its Subject
This 90-minute documentary/concert film was first broadcast on the Disney Channel in 1994. "I'm Alive" had just been released and it was a perfect moment in Jackson Browne's career for fans old and new to pay a visit, and to take stock. For me, "I'm Alive" represented a coming full-circle for Browne as he, after a decade of focusing his passions and talents mainly on social issues, returned to his greatest gift, that being his ability, through beautiful writing and performances, to probe the highs of Love, the depths of loss and the remarkable resiliency of the human heart. In my opinion, it's what Jackson has always been able to do better than any one of his peers, and it is why he is universally acknowledged to be one of his generation's very finest singer-songwriters...but back to the film. Jackson is captured just as the final touches are being put on "I'm Alive" and it serves as a perfect springboard all the way back, even beyond the beginning of his career. Through rare footage and meticulously interwoven interviews with Browne and many of his contemporaries, we learn of his early interest in songwriting, the strong and sobering impact of his first trip to New York, the reputation he quickly gained as a seminal voice in the Singer/Songwriter movement, his (continuing) altruistic involvement in social issues and, finally, "Going Home" musically, through incredibly moving performances of "Sleep's Dark and Silent Gate," "Sky Blue and Black" and "Before the Deluge." The pacing and editing of this documentary are simply perfect. A particularly effective highlight is a seamless 4-minute trip through Jackson's career as he performs "Doctor My Eyes" in three different decades! Finally, the taping of the documentary's exclusive concert footage is absolutely stellar. Remarkably, the cameras seem invisible even as they bring us literally onstage and mere inches from Jackson and his band, who appear to be in a large studio populated with a couple hundred very fortunate fans surrounding the beautifully lit stage, some standing and others seated on couches, overstuffed armchairs and rockers. "Going Home" is a film worthy of its subject, which is the highest praise I can possibly give it. By the time the credits roll past Browne singing "Running on Empty," it's clear that we have witnessed an artist of rare gifts and integrity, and one who has earned the love and respect of fans and peers alike. Fifteen years have passed since Going Home's original release, but if you've seen and heard Jackson Browne lately, as I have, you know that it might just as easily have been produced last week.

Some Enchanted Evening
What is not to love with this silky, lilting, lyrical documentary about Jackson Browne and his poetic musings. Like dripping warm, melted, bittersweet chocolate into my ears. What a treat to see and hear such talented musicians in his band as well! This documentary packs a sweet & sour punch from start to finish. Filled to the brim with unique recordings of Jackson Browne and his talented band members. Only one small downside: some video footage included some blurry, high contrast, low resolution imagery. Probably a result of the time it was recorded though. Overall assessment - I'd frame it and hang it on a wall.

Ten Stars
I love Jackson Browne's music and lyrics but after watching this I also love the man. What a stand up and thoughtful individual. I've always admired his willingness to speak out for the environment and share his liberal political views and in this video he states outright it might cost him fans but risks are worth taking. He clearly can't be bought - how refreshing. The music is fantastic as always and it is a real treat to see his band back then (some members remain the same). For example drummer Fritz Lewak. This guy plays with his whole body, not just his hands and he plays with such joy. We see the genius of David Lindley and fabulous percussion playing by Luis Conte. I appreciated the insight into JB's song writing he shared and seeing vintage clips from some of his concerts. This video was worth every penny. And by the way, the man has a face begging to be scupted with those chiseled features.

Must have for serious fans
If you're thinking of buying this DVD, just do it. I would almost promise that you won't be sorry. It's full of rare footage and clips from concerts that, to my knowledge, you just won't find anywhere else (clips from the MUSE era, etc). It's kinda nice to know that you can't find everything for free on YouTube. There are a couple of really, really nice versions of some of his less famous songs (Birds of St. Marks, Farther On). Yeah, most songs aren't complete or uninterupted, but it works out fine in this instance. Also, for any David Lindley fan, this DVD is almost as much about him as it is Jackson Browne - mostly playing lap steel, but some of his crazy instruments, too. So if you're a fan of these guys, their music, and their stories, pick up a copy of this film. If you're like me, you'll watch some parts many times over.

Jackson Browne As good today as in the 70’s
Jackson Browne is as relevant today as he was when he first recorded his songs in the 70’s. Listen to the words in Lives In The Balance, if you didn’t know better you would think he wrote it for present time. His vocals are spot on and sound just like his recordings, the mix of live performances and flashbacks to him in concert are outstanding. Nice to also have Graham Nash, David Lindley and David Crosby sit in on Lives In The Balance.

I learned a little about JB
This DVD was a good resource to learn (a little) more about Jackson Browne, the person. Not much biographical information out there about him. The DVD is basically video of him performing various songs over the years, with commentary in-between. There are a few occasions when the commentary overlapped the music, which was disappointing, but it didn't ruin my experience. I enjoyed this and I think most fans would enjoy it too.

Great for Writers
This video is full of insights about songwriting and the process of writing. Though the information shared is obviously unique to a particular writer of a particular artistic genre, much of the discussion applies to writing of all kinds. I'm a writing teacher (which some would say is a bit of an oxymoron)who has viewed this video many times and learned something new each time. It's actually a privilege to be allowed into the head of an artist as he reflects on his work. If you are a Jackson Browne fan, that makes it all the more interesting. I would recommend this video to anyone who wants to 1)learn more about writing and the creative process; and 2)be exposed to a writer who models what it is like to be a thoughtful human being "alive in the world."
