The New Oxford Organ Method

I bought this for my daughter as she learning to play and she has found it to be extremely helpful

Good quality book, part of a series of books required for learning the pipe organ under an RCO teacher.

A really systematic and thorough tutor with each chapter built around the performance of a piece and exercises to practise its technical challenges. The first half of the book concentrated on detached articulation for Baroque performance and the second on legato technique and finger substitution for Romantic music. While I think that some of the fingering in the Baroque section is bizarre, it certainly focuses the mind on what aspects to work on. I would say that you need a pretty committed pupil to work through all the exercises and you would need to supplement it with more pieces at each level. Many of the pieces are drawn from the Oxford Service Music for Organ books and these would be an excellent source for additional material.

This tutor is so brilliantly well thought-out, prepared, carefully curated, beautifully and spaciously presented. Each chapter concludes with a short(-ish) piece of genuine organ music, but the essence of the chapter that goes before focuses on techniques that will be needed for various bars within that piece, whether it be fingering, touch, articulation, pedalling, legato-fingering, hand-shifting by means of specially composed studies (often based on small fragments of the final piece in the chapter). In consequence, as my young pupil remarked earlier this week, "I've played the piece in bits already!" Just the pages at the beginning on good practice techniques are almost worth the price alone, and if a teacher can get a pupil to take these as well-meant rather than more earnest advice, then progress will indeed be quite brisk. It would be wonderful to think that there might be a successor volume to this one, though compiling this must have been a long-term labour of love. There has long been as gap in the market for a good organ tutor, with many of the previous ones seeming very worthy but ultimately somehow old-fashioned. I cannot recommend this excellent volume highly-enough.

My wife recently purchased The New Oxford Organ Method and she is thrilled with it. She thinks it’s a great resource for beginners and experienced organists alike. It has an excellent introduction which includes helpful practice strategies, many of which were new to her.The ‘Method’ is clearly laid out, logical and well written and is stuffed full of practice exercises to illustrate theory. It also includes a wonderful selection of music from the baroque period to the present day which is suitable for use in church services or for personal enjoyment.The additional resources on-line are also very helpful. With 279 pages the ‘Method’ should keep my wife busy for many hours! Highly recommended.

This is an excellent tool for learning to play the king of instruments! Each lesson progresses through exercises leading to the final, complete piece of each lesson, which will become part of your repertoire. It's exactly what I needed as a new organ student (with some piano-playing experience.)

This manual was exactly what I wanted. Very clear guidance working through selected repertoire for students of any age. Excellent explanation of the technical aspects associated with organ playing in contrast to the piano.

It is an exceptionally good method to learn the technique for all the different musical periods.The structure of first learning the basic techniques before you can play the selected organ composition is excellent!!

The authors of this excellent book on learning to play the Pipe Organ, have created a text that covers it all! If you haven't a teacher at the moment but have had beginning lessons for pipe organ this text can fill in and allow you to learn on your own.

An in depth analysis of playing technique and musical structure precedes the selected pieces. This approach is brilliant, especially if you have no choice but to study without a teacher. This book is a beacon. Don’t forget the recordings on the support website!
