as advertised. convert Apple proprietary SSD connector with 12+6pin & 17+7pin configuration to SATA
as advertised. this adapter converts both Apple proprietary SSD connectors with 12+6pin and 17+7pin configuration to a SATA connection. to be clear you can only access one SSD at a time via a built in switch. Works well with an old Apple SSD with 17+7 pins, do not have a 12+6 pin SSD so I have not tested that type of drive. would buy again.

THE ITEM TITLE IS BACKWARDS
This is a [17+7 pin SSD]-to-[2.5'' SATA] adapter. The title is the OPPOSITE of what it really is (on eBay too), which increased my Googling time maybe 30 minutes to an hour longer than what it would have been. At first I thought it didn't fit or was way too loose, then I noticed that the adapter comes with a screw that you're supposed to unscrew before plugging in your [17+7 pin SSD], then screw back in through your SSD's hole to keep in snug in place. Worked great when used in conjunction with a [2.5'' SATA-to-USB] chassis.

Works Well, But Drive Gets Hot in Plastic Enclosure
Would've been nice if the drive enclosure was made of metal rather than plastic. The samsung 512gb drive I installed generates quite a bit of heat during normal operation and a metal enclosure would aid in heat transfer significantly.

Check you SSD before purchasing!
I ended up returning this so I didn't use it. I'm giving it 5 stars because when it arrived it definitely appearedf to be a quality product, and the return is no hassle. The issue is that I definitely have a Mac A1370 (mid-2011) which is supposed to contain a 12+6 pin SSD. But when I got this device, my SSD did not fit into it. It turns out that my Mac A1370 has an SSD with Samsung part number MZ-EPC2560/0A2, which is a 17+7 pin SSD ( and typically matches with Macs manufactured in 2012).

Works Perfect for MacbookPro Retina 15" Mid-2012
My MacbookPro Retina 15" from Mid-2012 recently died (bad motherboard). I upgraded to a new macbook pro but wanted to transfer my data over. Fortunately this did the trick perfectly. It was simple plug in play once you get the SSD mounted in the carrier. My new computer recognized my old SSD right away and I migrated my data in no time.I'm super thankful this product exists. Now that my data is on the new computer (and backed up to my server), I'm using this SSD as an external HDD.

Saved my butt on a failing MacBook Air
Thankfully this device allowed me to recover files from my MacBook Air which was failing due to some non-SSD hardware issue. Once I’d pulled the drive from my MacBook Air, I was able to fit the ssd into this device and plug it into my disk cloner/external dock. From there it connected to my other Mac just like any other external drive and I was able to copy all my files off - which worked better than I’d anticipated. Overall happy with this, no issues and it did exactly what it says it would.

It does its job, but... too bad it won't fit on laptop 2.5 slot.
I would guess this is only for externals or for desktop.
