First one stayed on with batteries installed. Second one is good.
Update: The seller saw my review and contacted me. Sent me a replacement which works wonderfully. Change the rating to 5 stars.I compared similar lanterns on amazon before buying. This one has the best functions combined:1. Rechargeable yet can use batteries, make it ideal for home use AND outdoor multi nights camping trips.2. Magnets at the bottoms really comes handy sometimes.3. Flashlights. Some other models have flashlights too, but you need to remove and reattach the handle at a different positions. Imaging doing that in the dark?4. Hope I don't ever need the SOS lights but glad to have it.5. It is much brighter than my other lantern which uses 30 tiny individual LEDs.6. Seems durable enough if you don't throw it around and fight raccoons with it.Could be just mine since I don't see others mentioning this problem. Mine stays on with batteries installed even with the top pushed all the way down. Hope it's just mine doing this? Otherwise it's pointless having "backup" batteries when it drains when you are not using the lantern. Anyone know this? Need to decide on returning or replacing. Thanks!Other than that the functions are exactly what I need it for. Camped for 2 nights so the internal batteries lasted probably 6 hours with plenty bright lights at least. Flashlight function is very convenient with the dual handles. Magnets at the bottoms works well. And the emergence light could be useful.

This! Great buy and love the lightweight build. Also has a magnetized bottom which comes in handy! Very bright and the red SOS is a plus. Glad I got this, great for camping, power failure etc. Small enough, I keep it by my beside for instant light and reading. Battery AND charging port options, love it.

Small but Mighty, Versatile Flashlights/Lanterns
Summary: Whether you’re going camping or looking for emergency backup lights, these little lanterns are a good investment. They’re pretty versatile, being able to be used as a normal flashlight, an emergency beacon, or a lantern.Additional Comments:- If you buy them on Amazon, you get a 2-Pack of these handy little lanterns for about $29. I think there’s currently a $2 off coupon, but you also have to pay taxes in most states.- I was surprised a how tiny these lanterns turned out to be. They’re surprisingly light-weight too.- Usage Length: Wanted to see how long they would last, so I left one on. It’s not a true experiment, but I left both on for long periods of time over the last few days just to see what would happen. It stayed really bright (as in almost too painful to look at) for ~2-3 hours. Then, it turned a “normal” bright for about 4-5 hours beyond that. For 1-2 hours beyond that, it still worked but was almost useless as a lantern to do stuff with. (The last bit, it would work for moving around in the dark but you couldn’t see well enough to read by it.)- Recharge time: It came mostly charged. I plugged it in and it turned green light in about 20 minutes. After I’d used it for the 9-ish hours, it took about 3 hours to recharge to max power again.- I love that there’s a rechargeable battery as well as a slot for 3AA batteries.- The lanterns are surprisingly light weight. While this is super helpful if you intend to pack it, I think some people may be skeptical, thinking lightweight translates automatically to cheap quality. They subconsciously have old-school flashlights (that weigh a bunch because they’re powered by 3 D-batteries) in their heads.- The side and top handles are thin, but they seem to work fine.- The design is simple yet aesthetically pleasing.- The emergency flashers are highly annoying, which is perfect for drawing attention. There are a few settings for these. Conclusion:Moderately priced, light-weight, but bright and versatile lanterns perfect for everyday or emergency use.

An okay lantern for light use.
When tested at night I could see my fishing gear well while within 4 feet and level of the lantern. Around 6 feet visibility was much less, and gear was barely visible when offset in height no more than 2-3 feet of the lantern. This lantern is not what I would consider "high lumen". It's dimmer than my 300 lumens Ozark Trail head lantern. Maybe the combined lumen of all directions is "high lumen" but in any single direction, in comparison to my head lamp, I'd say the lumens are roughly half. The device will also only charge with it's micro usb charging cord. I'm not sure if it's a fast charging cord, or what, only that all of my other micro usb cords will not charge this device.Battery does not last 12 hours, as someone else had stated. Maybe the flashlight does, maybe the red lights. The lantern portion last at most 2.5 hours on a full charge, brand new. After then the lights began to dim noticeably.Although this lantern is mediocre, at it's price point I can't really complain. The running time, brightness, and rechargable battery all work for what I need.

Wonderfully convenient and useful item! I'm buying two more!
Love these! I bought two. These little, lightweight gems are just what I need to make my camping experience less cumbersome and better lit! My expensive, heavy, and large Coleman lamps and lanterns that require big batteries and propane are a thing of the past! There's an amazing amount of light from this little, lightweight lamp that you can adjust by lowering the top. The flashlight and red flashing emergency lights are an excellent innovation. I'm going to carry it (has nice little handles that fold against the side when not in use) when I go for my walk at night, as the light it produces along with the red strobe, are great. They will also be used in the house and car when not camping. Highly recommend!(If anything changes during our long road/camping trip, I will update this review.)
