Pull the lighter out of the casing you can refill and adjust the flame

is it possible to refill this with butane or do you need some type of different fuel

Refill with regular off the shelf butane. Also regular clipper lighters fit the shell. That's what I did because they last a lot longer between refills than the one that comes with it.
