Q: does this lay flat when open or do you need to hold it open?

Yes - so much so that you can completely fold the front cover back under the back cover so it takes up less space.

Q: What size refillable paper does this take? And is the closure magnetic?

Hello! The paper size is 5-7/8" x 8-1/4" and the closure is not magnetic, it's a pen loop. Thanks!

Q: Is fitting A5 paper the same as fitting Franklin classic size 6 ringer?

I don't know but everything i read says A5 paper.

Yes, it's a hard binder but very soft tho, it's not floppy or thin.
