A nice read, not a workshop type book but good advice and good for getting started
I love Joanie and have watched her YouTube channel since it's conception. I have been waiting for this book since it was announced and was so excited when I received it. I'm really happy for her that she has accomplished her goal of writing a book and I've given it 4 stars. Don't get me wrong, she has put alot of useful stuff in there but if you are past a beginner this book might not be that helpful for you. I read through it all quickly and took away a few bits that expanded on some weaker areas that I semi knew already but was glad to have Joanie's take on it.I was really looking for more in depth info on composition and lighting, creating scenes, using more professional equipment, perhaps actual challenges to recreate specific photos to learn how to accomplish this look or that etc. which she doesn't do, and that's fine! This is really a book to get into food photography and how to think about it, rather than learn any technical skills. I honestly have learned a ton from Joanie and her YouTube channel, so I'm not knocking all the advice and time she has put into sharing her craft, she is one of the most generous teachers out there, having said that, that is where I will remain to learn from her, I feel I've bought the book more as a fan to support her rather than learn from it. I hope that's not too harsh a review but I think I was expecting more. There also aren't that many photos or diagrams as I expected. Perhaps I just got the wrong idea as the book wasnt described in too much detail before its release.I'm not discouraging anyone, do buy her book as any input from a pro is helpful, just don't expect it to be a workshop type book. When it said 52 tutorials I thought it would be week one, follow this brief, week 2 follow this brief, but it's more like try taking a photo with the lights in different places or learn about props etc. and leaving it up to you. Again that's fine but if a client wants a shot where it looks like a sunny morning for breakfast or a moody shot for a cocktail it doesn't cover that sort of detail as such. I guess her emphasis is for you explore and expand in your own way and she's encouraging you to do that.I Do love you Joanie! Thank you for all your help and I wish you all the success in your career and life ❤️
