Must Read
While I am still in the process of reading this book, digesting it section by section and working to apply it to my professional and personal life, I already know that this is one of my top ten books for the year. I read avidly in the areas of neuroscience and psychology, particularly where they overlap and affect language and self-regulation. If it were not for the insights I have already gleaned from this accessible, enjoyable, and subtly referenced collection of many current perspectives in the research literature, I would likely not benefit from the educational and personal successes I have recently enjoyed. I thank the authors and recommend wholeheartedly this book to those looking for a practical application of recent discoveries and accumulated knowledge in the field to real world conflicts - external and internal.

You MUST read this book!
Just 12 simple strategies quickly improve your brain! The exercises and examples bring the research to life. Easy to apply strategies deliver big results in just 8 weeks. I am already using several of these techniques, but I'm excited to implement the rest.Try my "daily 3" exercise:Send a friend who doesn't know you well an email every day that bullet points your 3 wins and accomplishments of the previous day and the 3 wins and accomplishments you want to achieve today. She sends you an email with her wins and accomplishments.Your friend responds to your email with complimentary statements next to each bullet point. You respond to her email the same way. It's easy to get excited for someone else which puts you in an optimistic frame of mind. And it's lovely to hear what a great job you're doing from your friend!I've been doing this for 4 years and experienced astounding growth and improved productivity.

Very interesting and informative, but not cross cultural.
This is not the kind of book one can read and just put away. It requires a lot of practice to see results, total immersion in its teachings, and a lot of personal self-knowledge and reflection. I am still practicing many of its recommendations, and I am very glad that I have this book. I have only one concern, though. It seems to assume that facial and social expressions of emotional states are universal. That has not been my experience. I've lived in this country for more than 50 years, and I am still finding instances of miscommunication due to different cultural assumptions, gestures, mannerisms, etc., that go beyond words. I would love to see a follow up study on those differences, since I know that they run very deep, are very much unconscious, and in a pluralistic society such as ours, they can create a lot of miscommunication. For example, I recently attended a memorial service for a friend. Her family was there, as well as a large number of friends. I became very aware of feeling a very uncomfortable sense of coldness, especially when I people praise the strength of the family. I realized I was operating from a different cultural milieu, where we expect grief to be out in the open, and out of conscious control. I had to change my cultural filters in order to understand their frame of mind and not let my own deep-seated values create the wrong impression on my mind. A book on those issues would be very interesting and would complement this one very well.

A Book that is Actually Helpful
When I bought this book I was struggling emotionally. I found the information helped me to understand why and how I could help myself. Since I am a follower of Jesus Christ I give him the glory for the desire to use this information to heal. Two things helped me a lot: realizing that when I think about past traumatic hurts that my brain and body relive it as if it were happening again and that keeping tract of daily successes or goals accomplished helped to foster contentment. The book also shows you how to be a better communicator so that people can respond more favorably to you and you also are able to listen better. I would recommend this book if that is what you are looking for.

Transformative!
This book will change your life--if you practice what it says, which is difficult because habits are so ingrained. Did you know your brain goes into panic when it hears "no?" The age old debate over whether language shapes what we know really doesn't matter because it clearly shapes how our brains function and ultimately affects our psychological and physical well being. This is a book the entire world should read because it paves a path to a more compassionate, understanding, and civilized humanity. Many thanks to Newberg and Waldman for their years of dedicated research. (I also highly recommend How God Changes Your Brain.)

A great read.
Its a wonderful, astute, excellent book. One of my favorites. For the Young and Old alike. It is written by an MD neuroscientist and discusses the 12 principles of compassionate communication and how practice and meditation promote changes in the brain structure that makes it increasingly more easy to help others communicate back. It can be done at any age. It elaborates on each principle to help improve work and personal communication in relationships. It makes one optimistic that you can change self defeating habits of the past. Once again, one of my all time favorite books. It is science based, humane, and encouraging. I also am an MD, but I don't think you have to be to understand the book.

Read if you are ready for a life change.
It changed me in quiet but meaningful ways. It exposes the thornier aspects of one’s way of relating to self and the world. What you need to know is all in the first 2-3 chapters, which is not a negative, since it delivers to those who may not have the patience for a whole book, even one as slim as this. But the rest of the chapters detail how to put the principles into practice. And that separates the casual reader from the one who is really committed to change.

SIX STARS !!
Six stars. This book was recommended to me by a delegate who attended my early conflict resolution workshop. Being a Pastor, am reading it alongside my knowledge of biblical principles. Am finding it lining up with most things the Bible talks about ( amazing abilities of an ant for example ) , ( Tower of Babel , how God disrupted a huge project by confusing language , and where the book says the organism can fail if brain communications fail ) It’s an Amazing book , l can’t stop highlighting and underlining the gems am finding in it. I haven’t even gone half way through it !!! I have already recommended it to a brilliant young man l know who l believe will equally enjoy reading it like l am now !
