Not sure what kind, but it's some kind of plastic. If your animal is a stinker like my caique, he pops the top off....however he can't dump the bowl so it works out well.

Q: do you put the food directly in the station or do you put it in a dish and then put it in the feeding station?

We put the food directly in the station, no second bowl. It works great! Definately less food being tossed out of the cage since we got it. It's easy to clean too.

Q: Has anyone tried this for pigeons? I love the concept but nervous the opening may be a little small

The hole diameter is about 2" in diameter if that helps!

Q: Will this work for chinchillas or is it too small?

No, this item is designed for birds, sugar gliders, marmosets, flying squirrels, and other small climbing animals. The opening is 2" in diameter which would most likely be too small for a chinchilla.
