White Box: Fantastic Medieval Adventure Game

Before I get into detail here, keep in mind this book is absolutely FREE on DriveThruRPG's website, so there's no need to buy a physical copy without already knowing what you're gonna get. It's a faithful rendition of the old D&D system as it first appeared in 1974, with only a few minor modern tweaks and house rules to make it easier for modern players to grasp. It's a quality book, especially given the price, and well worth paying to have a few physical copies to pass around the table on game night. It's got everything you really need in just one book - plenty of monsters, weapons, gear, and tons of handy treasure & Wandering Monster charts to roll random encounters or hand-pick from to populate your own custom settings. D&D couldn't POSSIBLY be easier than this.Why would anyone want to play D&D like this when 5th Edition exists? Easy - it's simpler, meaning less "homework" and more time spent actually getting into the game. Like all games in the "OSR" movement (Old-School Renaissance), it's all about putting the focus back on the players and getting the bloated rules out of the way.

If you enjoy the idea of playing Table Top Role Playing Games (TTRPG), but don’t want to read through 2-3 HUGE books just to play it, you’ll probably like this a lot.It’s basically an older, more true to the original D&D. It’s where the purpose of the game is more important than how many tattoos your character has - not as basic as this, but similar to like when you play Super Mario, your “character” is basically always Mario lol, so you’re not super attached to him, and it’s not as devastating when he dies.And there’s no subversive modernity garbage like “sympathy for the devil”, where suddenly a demonic or orc character isn’t actually pure evil anymore, but rather they’re “complicated”… sure lol a killer of babies is just “misunderstood” lolz. Anyway..Great book, super affordable, very playable, still very open and house rules totally welcome.

Got my copy yesterday and read through it. I love it!Great presentation and interpretation of OSR style rules. Very slick design, especially considering the price. And at that low cost, I have no problem marking it up with my own house rules.I'm so impressed by this product, I'm going to buy a second copy for easier reference at the table!

Excellent starter for introducing newbies to role playing. Also for gamers who want to try DMing but are worried about being overwhelmed as it includes bestiary and a decent treasure section both mundane and magical. Also includes sections on equipment, weapons and armor that short and concise. Same for the spell list section that is varied and fun without being too complicated.Still has problem of casters and clerics starting out with no spells. Never understood that but having an experienced player to make adjustments on this will correct that problem. Really guys, you don't have to be THAT true to the game as it was created in the 70's.There is a problem in the race section for dwarves and halflings: No advancement charts!! Deducted a point for that major editing error.Other than that really liked the old school feel of this book and compares favorably to a personal favorite: the expert rules book. Only thing missing is the art of Bill WIllingham.Again, I'd have an experienced gamer go thru the race and character section to boost the characters up especially at the lower levels but I highly recommend this book

At 5 bucks I bought this almost out of a morbid curiosity. How bad would the print quality/content have to be to be cheaper than a sandwich on a chain store? Turns out not only is it ludicrously cheap, it's a great recreation of the classic rules set, it's got illustrations and while the print quality isn't something to run home and tell folks about it is far from bottom of the barrel. The fact you could buy 30 of these before getting close to the MSRP of current editions makes this one of the best bargains in the hobby.

Stays true to the original and you can't beat the price

This is a very easy to consume, small RPG, that packs a punch. Reminiscent of the small booklet/magazine style, games from the 70s/80s.For the price it’s worth getting.

If you have ever wanted to try an OSR clone or are returning to gaming. This is a perfect insanely cheap option. It’s clearly written and everything is contained in one book. Grab some dice and friends!

Un intero set nuovo, sacchettino compreso.Una cosa bellissima. Una favola a occhi aperti.Poi, secondo me, le regole son fatte per il Dungeon Crawl, quindi bando alle ciance, pigliate un foglio a quadretti, i dadi, una manciata di amici e le patatine e cominciate a raccontare rava e fava di una storia già sentita almeno sei milioni di volte.Partiamo dalla taverna, davanti a una birra, magari anche nella realtà della stanza dove state giocando, i personaggi che i giocatori hanno generato - senza barare - si conoscono e si infilano nel Dungeon per accaparrarsi grandi tesori e menare duro un mucchio di mostri schifidissimi.E SSSSSBAAAAM! tornate adolescenti, ma senza le menate degli adolescenti.Tutto questo a un prezzo assurdamente ridicolo - nemmeno 5 euro. Una cosa che ti vengono le lacrime agli occhi.Ok, il gioco l'ho spiegato. Chi ha capito ha capito davvero. Questa roba è imperdibile.Amazon mi ha consegnato il libricino in un batter d'occhio, quindi tutto perfetto. Forse troppo. Magari ci avrei pensato su e mi sarei risparmiato l'acquisto dei dadi. Che però sono belli.Bando alle ciance, se avete qualche amico che come me, ha perso interi fine settimana e giornate su giornate a giocare a questa roba e gli regalate una cosa simile può essere che vi chiamerà a fare il padrino di suo figlio.D'altronde e d'altro canto a volte essere nemici, giocando personaggi di allineamento diverso facilita, sopra tutto se state fuggendo dalla caverna di un gruppo di Troll infuriati perché gli avete rubato il loro tesoro.Auguri di mille e più mille avventure.

This is a fantastic little game guide.Simple, rules light, and brilliant.Reading this today took me back to the '70s and skipping homework because I was too busy hand copying the 'original' 3 white books.I run a weekly D&D 5e session as DM and am finding it an ongoing chore to keep up with every players rules knowledge. They encounter a monster, all you hear is the rustle of pages as monster manuals and players handbooks are consulted, rules bandied about, and group decisions based on stats are made.This book of 'guidelines' takes us back to the original, bare-bones, seat of the pants action. You can't quote the rules because, fir all intents and purposes, there aren't any!Bravo! Best £5 I've spent in many a year!

Very simple ruleset that's affordable and don't overwhelm you with unnecessary stuff.
