Wild Country (World of the Others Book 2)

The Wild Frontier Where Terra Indigene, Intuits, and Humans Mix It Up
This captivating story from the world of The Others focuses on the town of Bennett situated in the Midwest near the Elder Hills with the nearby Intuit settlement of Prairie Gold. The main characters Jana Paniccia, Jesse Walker and her son, Tobias, Barb Debaney, and Tolya Sanguinati, were introduced in the Others #4, MARKED IN FLESH. This story runs concurrently with the timeline with some events from #5 ETCHED IN BONE so the catastrophic actions that occurred during the Great Predation when the Elders decided to brutally thin the human herds have just happened a short time ago.The Elders are allowing Bennett to be resettled but run entirely by the terra indigene with Tolya Sanguinati as mayor and Virgil Wolfgard as the “snarly” sheriff. Jana Paniccia agreed to take a job as a deputy in this frontier town where life is much as it was back in the early frontier days. Many new people have come to take over the grim task of cleaning out the homes and businesses of the previous population that was totally annihilated by the angry Elders in response to the Humans First and Last created war. Every man, women, and child was taken out, only the Intuits who have been friends of the terra indigene survived in Prairie Gold. Many people are moving to Bennett, most of them good, but some very bad outlaws who want to take over the town have nefarious plans to overthrow Mayor Tolya and his terra indigene council. A new crop of villains, and for the first time they are Intuits, are shown in a negative light using their inborn skills to swindle humans. The Blackstone Clan of Intuits prey on those left alive by travelling the available railways. A former member of their clan has been hiding out in Prairie Gold for some years. One group of settlers has with them a young blood prophet whom they rescued. More terra indigene are also moving into the area, regrouping after their own losses. Saul, a Panthergard, shows up with an unusual foster “nephew” of his own: a young man who has connections to the cassandra sangues that will intrigue fans of this series. Jana’s boss, Virgil, barely tolerates humans; he and Jana have quite a lot to figure out between them in order to work together without teeth biting or bullets flying. Sparks take wing in another way as Jana and Tobias Walker form an intriguing relationship as well as two other characters. Those of us who have wished for a bit more romance in this Urban Fantasy series will be pleased. It is hard not to shake one’s head watching the people who never seem to catch on to the fact that the Elders will no longer tolerate bad humans. And Elder/terra indigene justice bites back in a fatal way. This tale took me on an intense and sometimes very emotional journey with these known characters and the new ones. It is thrilling and satisfying to be back in this creative and sometimes very scary world. Readers will be well pleased and very interested to see life from the perspective of this newly reformed frontier town and how its inhabitants cope with the new paradigm where humans have lost much of, and in some places, all of their autonomy. All the land is all wild country now.

Great book!
Wow! Just... wow. First, as soon as I was into this book, I realized the difference between every other paranormal author out there and Anne Bishop. There are many, many great writers and good storytellers but no one comes close to the level of perfection in writing that Anne Bishop has achieved in this series. Where most books have gotten to the point that action is the desired plot device that keeps us coming back and turning pages, in this series it is the very beauty in the writing that enthralls. I didn't NEED to keep reading this story to find out what happens next, I WANTED to keep reading because I was so far into the very world the author creates! Ms. Bishop sprinkles in all the nuances of every single character so beautifully that a reader is totally and completely immersed in the world rather than just reading about it. Again, I love many but Anne.... man!!I loved every single thing about this book.... right up until the very end (but we'll talk about that in a minute) I realized that NO ONE (IMHO) gets right inside a character and paints them with such perfect clarity better than this author. Virgil and the wolves think and behave exactly like a wolf would. In their human bodies they are perplexed with how to adjust to a human's way of thinking. Likewise, Jana and the humans naturally think like humans and can't understand why the wolves behave the way they do. I LOVED all the little nuanced things like Cowboy Bob and the Me Time room!! And I still laugh at the "exploding puff-balls" every. single. time! Jana did annoy me at times because she refused to accept the way the Other's natures were and continued to demand they act more like humans. Sometimes it didn't even seem like she tried. Maybe that was intentional on the author's part in making us, as humans, evaluate how we consider or adapt to people who aren't like us... ?*** possible spoiler ahead***I do think the villain's plot-line was just a tiny bit weak. Maybe because I just couldn't see the Sanguinati (sp?) cowing down to them so easily. I know they were trying to handle the situations the way Jana and Jessie said they should (more like humans) but once ALL that evidence proved the Blackstones were very dangerous to the people of Bennett AND they knew Parlan wasn't telling the truth about backing down AND that many Others would die AND all the baddies were right outside of town, Tolya STILL let it all play out? That just didn't make a bit of sense to me.Then, once the big climax (fighting) happened there were a LOT of small threads and questions that were left hanging and never answered. Like, what happened to Maddie (the small blood prophet that Kane was watching)??? Or the big bad that was after Jana, did he change his mind or just put it on pause?? And what exactly are the Sanguinati planning on doing? Yeah, the humans in Bennett are protected but they are also prey (that's what Tolya said) What the heck does that mean?I would just chalk it up to ".. to be continued" if it weren't for the fact that, since Meg and Simon's story ended, each subsequent book has been a story on its own. If I knew there would be more answers down the road, the book is a solid 10 out of 5. But, if that was it.... I still keep the 5 star rating (because with this level or writing, it just can't be anything less) but I would be ever so slightly disappointed without more answers.*NOTE* This is NOT a stand-alone novel. It really needs to be read as part of the series in order to, not only be understood sufficiently, but to be appreciated thoroughly.

Exceptional
A truly enjoyable read. Of all the Others/Wild Country books this one was my favourite. I laughed, I cried, I swooned, I flinched. The us and them mentality still hits too close to home as it’s currently 2021 as I submit this review.

Sooo, good!!
Oh my goodness I loved this book. It made me laugh, cry and cheer with delight at the story. I adore the world she has constructed and the characters within, and find my self immersed and living the story with them. One of the best books I’ve read in ages, if you haven’t read any of this series then make sure you do, it’s an absolute must read.

enjoyable read, did not want to put book down
Loved the characters, fast pace of story line. Underlying humour between humans and others. Hope there are more stories to come.
