An excellent purview of the twenty first century’s damages as we hope to move forward…

Another Maalouf masterpiece
Woven into a number of stories, Maalouf does a wonderful job of speaking of the heart of the issues in Lebanon, the Middle East and much more globally. He lightly brings up deep thoughts on religion, revolution, extremism, emigration through the background stories of a number of friends, all from different backgrounds. Gives you a lot to think about...Had the book not been written long time ago, I would’ve thought that a sequel is in the works! Maybe a bit disappointed :)

Not his best work
The book is probably a biographical narrative. It captures Malouf return to his homeland and certainly captures the predicament of the migrant exile in returning to a familiar yet profoundly changed home. However the plot is rather weak especially when compared to the power of Malouf’s other works.
