Managing Pain Before It Manages You

I purchased this book used around the middle of the 1990's
It was good material when I was in a car accident and went through a left sided disk fusion with titanium plates and screws. This one accident was the dramatic end to life as I knew it and this book helped and gave me something to go by. There is so much medical data that has been fed into this book it has helped me to understand my situation and thoughts. You probably don't need it all but it will wait for you.

very comprehensive pain management tool
This book is a wonderful aid in addressing chronic pain. Dr. Margaret Caudill is an exceptional medical professional. I was fortunate enough to have been be able to have participated in one of her pain management groups in the late 1990's in Boston, MA. It gave me "tools" to use for living with chronic pain issues and the edition of this book was the main text for the program. This edition has been nicely updated. Be well!

Good For Beginners Only
I can sum this up in three words. Exercise, nutrition, and positive thinking. I was hoping for something more advanced. If you know absolutely nothing about mindfulness and meditation, this is a good book. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to glean any new info from it. Definitely a beginners book.

Great price and very worth getting. Dr. Recommended but specifically this addition
I have severe dyslexia so I cannot entirely comment on this book but you do not want to buy it as a candle because there are very important work sheets in this book that make it work per se. The pain institute at Emory University first suggested this and other pain doctors have suggested as well. In my case at , I have fibromyalgia, arthritis and a very severe spine and nerve injuries from auto accident. So the book is not going to do me the benefit of that it would someone with just two out of three of those. Absolutely worth getting and great price for what you get.

Not as helpful as possible
Found this not as helpful as possible. Too much CBT and no spiritual help included. I found a book called And This Too Shall Last by kJ Ramsey much more helpful because she has actually has been through chronic pain is going through chronic pain whereas the first book the author makes no reference to ever having been in this situation and you can tell by reading it that she hasn’t been in the situation. I needed help from someone who understood and this book was not that.

Great book, extremely helpful
This book is amazing. The author clearly understands chronic pain and how it impacts your life. It’s going to be an ongoing challenge but the ideas presented in this book are helping me already! Highly recommend!

Nothing New Same Info that is Available Free on Internet or Dr Office Pamphlets
I have been dealing with chronic back pain for many years. At some point in time or another I have been involved with the schemes outlined in this book. If your pain is not too severe they might be of some use to you. Most disturbing was how the book started with all the mental stuff, blaming people, feeling sorry for oneself, being depressed, and on and on. That was hard to read. That is not me and never was.If you are new to dealing with pain as a way of life, you might learn a few things, but if you have been dealing with it for along time and have tried and or use a lot of things charting, journaling, nutrition, movement, body position, heat/cold, whirlpool, meditation and it's alternatives, massage, and even medications for something you do not have, this book is not useful. It will just be a other exercise in frustration.Probably what led me to believe she was not going to have very helpful information for is statement that there is no treatment for Fibromyalgia. If I had heard that a couple of years ago I might have agreed, but not today. After nearly 40 years of dealing with the effects of Fibromyalgia symptoms, finally my former pain specialist found the correct two very low doses of prescription medications to handle those symptoms. It is not a "cure," but it is a "treatment." Please note, there are no antidepressants involved. If your doctor tells you to buy it, like mine did, I suppose you must.PS: The pages do not fit on Kindle Fire correctly; you have to scroll down each page before flipping to a new page.

Profoundly good
For those suffering from chronic pain, this book is truly amazing in illuminating ways to perceive and process pain (even to skeptics like me). If you think that no book can help pain, think again, buy this book and read it.

How committed are you?
If you are willing to put in the time for the exercises it is valuable.
