Approx. How many cloves of garlic fit in the presser at once?

The crushing basket is very small. I find I have to cut any decent sized clove in half. That said, it does a great job of crushing the garlic to very, very small pieces, e.g. what you want for great garlic butter. It’s also super sturdy.

Can you take it apart for cleaning?

I’m sure you can, but with the simple design you can just clean the entire thing. I didn’t take apart, just soaked it in warm soapy water and it was clean.
