Can't recommend this enough - for fans of Jennifer Armentrout and Sarah J Maas.
Broken (Book 1, The Watcher Chronicles) (Angel Romance Paranormal) Kindle Editionby S.J. West (Author) I borrowed this book with the Kindle Unlimited program, and the Audible version came with the KU versions. After reading the initial series of From Blood and Ash by Jennifer Armentrout, the same author's Harbinger series, and Sarah J Maas's Crescent City series, I needed a story with the same humor, magick, a heroine who could hold her with or without a man, and a swoon worthy hero. After casting around with absolutely no prize, I stumbled on S.J. West and her Watchers, and I fell in love. The writing is superior. I gasped, I cried, I spent several nights not sleeping while either reading the book or listening to the excellent Audible version, and I fell in love with Mason, and oddly Lucifer. I happily dove in the world-building, something about the world after the eruption of the Tear hit my happy place. Ms. West effortlessly weaves the world into her prose much like the much-lauded Sarah J Maas. There is light, there is shadow, there is joy, there is fear. The world has a clear government and the culture of the South still exists, with its strong women and the hospitality it is famous for, while living under the Watchers as they rule the world. The mythology of the Nephilim and the Watchers from the Abrahamic Bible creates a fascinating world and gives our heroine, Jessica, a deep background, an amazing love story, and something to struggle against. At seven years old, Jess loses both parents when the Tear in the sky rips open and her mother and father disappear. The mysterious Tear bring the Watchers out and they now control our Earth. The Watchers are angels – the angels who, when tasked with teaching humanity necessary skills, fall in love with human women and have families. This does not make God happy. He curses both the Watchers and their offspring. Now 22 and a member of the Watcher Agency, Jess finds out that she is part of the plan to save the Earth and the universe. She meets Mason, a gruff but funny Watcher who will earn her love.I can't recommend this enough. If I could, I would force the entire series into people's hands and their kindles. The writer is superb and the Audible version has a perfect narrator who can expertly voice all of the characters and their changes. This book deserves more than 5 stars, but since I can't do that, 5 stars out of 5.https://www.amazon.com/Broken-Watcher-Chronicles-Romance-Paranormal-ebook/dp/B00B1ASGXQ/

Great Story
I am breathless. This is the first book I have ever read by SJ West and I am hooked. The love story between Mason and Jess is so sweet. They're both so broken that at times I thought they were never going to get together. The rip is something that no one truly seems to understand except that people of our world disappear to be replaced by someone from within the rip. This is something truly terrifying. This is not only a love story but one filled with suspense and adventure. Lucifer is pretty much what one can expect. He shows up in his old form (before he was cast out of heaven) but he is still deceitful, conniving, despicable, and full of lies. The author does a marvelous job pulling you, the reader, into the story. I highly recommend this book for anyone who loves a good book.

Broken
Wow is the word I would use. Jess meets an angel disguised as a watcher, then comes into her own powers. Lots of twists and turns but easy to follow and the chemistry between Jess and her angel is palatable.

Lovely Read
A wonderfully well written and thought out novel. I am not very good at writing reviews and not spoiling the read for others. So I'm going to try to stick to the methods behind this book and how the author's approach makes this a must read. I hardly ever put my Kindle down, reading two books per week on average, and I'm finding lately that more and more often authors are not proof reading their own books, or not hiring capable editors, and the results are a book that you literally stutter through due to all kinds of mutilations to the English language and proper grammar rules. S.J. West is an exception as every single one of her books is grammatically correct making them easy to read. Her stories, her characters are so thought out I imagine she has walls in her home, or office, dedicated to sticky notes and string connecting various ideas, characters, plots, etc. I enjoy her work and am always thrilled when she releases the next installment in her series. Most of her books can be read as stand alone, not requiring the reader to have read previous novels. However, the way she writes.. she connects her stories and after you read two or three, you begin to notice how, even if the characters change from one series to the next, the stories actually intertwine and connect to one another... resulting in one very large collection of well written, enjoyable to read series.

omg love this story
Not what I expected. Very well written. Story of two lost souls and their unbelievable background. Will they overcome all the obstacles to be together? Do they love each other enough to fight for it?

it was in-between
It was not good, way too much angst and it wasn’t entirely bad either. The characters are in-between also, Jess is weak but tries to come off as strong, Mason is a whiner, who never once shows any Angelic Power other than teleportation. It’s just not a strong PNR book, I can’t recommend it, and will not continue the series. It took me over a week just to try to get through it.

richtiges gutes Buch
Die Story ist total spannend und mitreißend. Wirklich gut geschrieben und die Sprecherin vom Hörbuch ist auch toll. Ich bin schon gespannt wie’s weiter geht, nach diesem Cliffhanger am Ende

Great story - part of a larger universe.
Slow build sweet romance (no spice). Interesting world building. Cliffhanger! Worth a read (or listen) as audio & ebook free on KU.

Amazing!
I can’t even! I’ve never read from this author before but I really like her writing style. The way she has woven fantasy into theology is unfettered and seamless. I’m addicted to the rawness of the characters. Can’t wait to see what happens next. Also side note I listened to this on audio book and omg this narrator is AMAZING! She really brings the characters to life. And can I thank her for not butchering the Australian accent! 🥰I’m so impressed by everything about this book and audiobook.

Jesse is a more dynamic and fun character than Lily
This book takes place after Lily and Brand's story. It starts with an interesting dystopian/ apocolyptic premise: The Tear. I do not want to spoil the premise of the series but learning about the Tear and Jesse' parents makes this series even more intriguing than West's last one. Jesse is a more dynamic and fun character than Lily. Jesse is spunky, tells it like it is and is overall more mature. I love how this book tells a love story but the overall story is more important than romance. This is book 1 of 3 and I know this trilogy is going to keep me on my toes, just like her other work. I have found that each story S.J.West writes, she continues to improve her overall style and storytelling. I love that this book continues to teach me more about the Watchers and their world.

meh.
I had high hopes, Jess started as a strong character, but somehow never lived up to her potential imo. Unfortunately this book just wasn’t for me. 🤷🏻♀️
