In The Flesh - Live

An exceptional concert video from Roger Waters and company!
I put off buying Roger Waters live double-CD "In the Flesh", knowing that there was to be a DVD release of the same material later on. Well, once the DVD was released I popped it in my player not really knowing what to expect musically or visualy, now all I can say is...WOW!!! This is an EXCEPTIONAL concert DVD with detailed, crystal-clear audio (perhaps the best I've ever heard), excellent stage visuals, creative direction and camera work, and of course, an EXCELLENT band of musicians that really breathe new life into Waters/Floyd's music! Snowy White, Doyle Bramhall II, and Andy Fairweather Low make for a fine guitar trio, more than covering for the absence of the David Gilmore's, Eric Clapton's, and Jeff Beck's who played on the original versions of these songs. The keyboard work of Andy Wallace and Jon Carin captures all of those little details and "nuances" from the old Pink Floyd recordings. Graham Broad is a strong, dynamic drummer (superior to Pink Floyd's Nick Mason in my opionion), and the three female backing vocalist really help to beef-up the arrangements on several occassions - in fact, the Floyd classic "Mother" seems all the more appropriate with a woman's voice singing the chorus! As the master of ceremonies, Roger Waters mans his bass guitar for most of the show (occassionaly strumming rhythm guitar while Fairwheather Low handles bass duties), and his dark, unique voice (although some may criticize it's lack of range) bristles with real emotion and energy here...it's obvious that Roger FEELS the words as he sings them! Being a fan and follower of Waters solo career, I was quite happy to see several songs from his excellent "Amused To Death" album included here ("Perfect Sense", "The Bravery of Being Out of Range", "It's A Miracle", and the title track), these songs are probably the highlight of the show for me - and the strong anti-war messages of the "Amused To Death" songs seem all the more relevent and thought-provoking when listened to in post-September 11th America! (Although sometimes seen as a "ranting radical", Waters is probably one of the most wise and brave voices in music today; using his art to promote peaceful solutions to the world's ills...instead of the mindless jingo-ism of, say, Paul McCartney's popular pro-war jingle "Freedom"!) Of the extensive Pink Floyd material covered here one big highlight was the emotion-packed full-length version of "Dogs" - this version even includes the atmospheric keyboard/drum duet in the middle, and surpasses the excellence of the original studio version in my opinion! I also felt that "Set Control For the Heart of the Sun" sounded more bright and vital here than I've ever heard it before. Some other Floyd highlights (for me at least) would have to include "Shine On You Crazy Diamond", "Time", "Southhampton Dock", and "Mother"...I only wish that "The Final Cut" would have been included right after "Southhampton", like it is on the original album! For an encore we are treated to a new Waters song, titled "Each Small Candle". The lyrics of "Candle" are a thoughtfully-crafted call to wage mercy instead of fear, and peace instead of war; and the darkly-colored music adds intensity to the message, and grows stronger with repeated listens. Do I have any criticisms of this DVD? Well, I would have liked to have heard MORE of Waters solo material (nothing is featured here from "Radio KAOS", and only one track is featured from "Pros and Cons of Hitchhiking"), since there seems to be a very uneven balance between Floyd and solo tracks here (around 90 minutues of Floyd, but only 45 minutes or so of Roger's solo work.) There are already several high-quality official live recordings of MOST of these Floyd classics - but Roger's live solo work is much more of rariety, isn't it? However, any small disappointment aside; this is an EXCELLENT concert DVD, and should NOT be missed by any Roger Waters fan! Oh' and one other thing; if your DVD machine has a headphone jack, listen to this disc through a good set of stereo headphones...the mix, channel seperations, and clarity of sound is AMAZING!!!

Amazing culmination of talent
This is really just an unbelievable DVD that needs to be viewed by all people, regardless of their feelings for classic rock or Pink Floyd. Snowy White, a British blues guitarist, and Doyle Bramhall II, a Texan with an SRV style to his playing, take over for Mr. Gilmour and do it justice. Doyle Bramhall... his attire takes some getting used to. Hes easy to dislike. I rolled my eyes and sneered upon the sight of what looked to me like a high-class gigolo from the 80's.... but this kid ROCKS. In fact: As I'm writing this he is on tour with Eric Clapton, along with Derek Trucks from the Allman Bros. Believe me: Bramhall II, is a legend in the making (and I think hes toned down his attire lately... which is good). Kudos to Roger for grabbing this talent.Jon Carin, who amazingly enough is now touring with David Gilmour... is obvously a very talented and likable fellow. What he and the band do with Dogs is beyond words. Carin's strumming and excellent voice along with Bramhall's ferocious guitar chops... you just got to see/hear it to believe. The backing singers are very soulful. Well two of them are... the skinnier girl on the right (from your/audience's perspective) does close to nothing as far as I can tell and screws up her only solo (on the Bravery of Being Out of Range), but the other girls belt out some spine-chilling solos. The way the one lady sings Mother... and the way the other girl sings Perfect Sense... you couldn't ask for more soulful, well-honed voices with those two around.Roger, as another reviewer said, is very at ease and constantly expresses his enjoyment... for better or worse. I guess the thing of it is, and my only real gripe, is that this concert shows that Roger Water's Live doesn't really need Roger Waters. Half the time his hands aren't on the instrument!!! but he is instead interacting with the crowd. Cool, but uh... you get the feeling that he may as well put down the bass and just do his singing/talking. Fairweather-Low is usually playing the bass lines that you hear.I won't go track by track (C. Numb rocks!), but will just sum up by saying that I love all Floyd, and do consider Mr. Gilmour's unique, expressive guitar to be perhaps the most quintessential piece to what is really Pink... but if you just take this concert for what it is... it is a true masterpiece.

What a Fantastic SHOW!!!
This DVD is so Incredible. What a Great 2 and half hour show. Wow, so many songs (24 of them). I am not a big Pink Floyd fan, but I do enjoy their 'The Wall' and 'The Dark Side of the Moon' and that was the only albums I know of them. I bought this DVD because I wanted to see them live and hear some of the familiar songs, and wow, I got plenty of Great songs I know and so many new ones I haven't heard of before, and I love them as well. I love everything from this show, the performaces, the Sound is incredible, the visual is wonderful and plus, it has Close Caption for the hearing impaired or you just wanted to know what they are singing about. I use the Caption most of the times. Almost every night since I bought this 3 weeks ago through Amazon.com for a GREAT Price, I would lay in bed with my 7 inch DVD player and my good headphones and play a couple of songs before going to bed. Some of the songs is very soothing and puts me to sleep because it's beautiful with the piano, guitar, saxophone and more. If you are slightly a Pink Floyd fan, then you will be a much bigger fan after watching this a couple of times, and I have watched it many times and I love it. 5 Stars all the way baby. Do you remember me saying - TWO and a HALF HOUR SHOW? I'm not kidding, 24 songs and they played them all with such beauty and perfection. Sometimes the guitar player freestyle a little and it just makes it better. GET This DVD. You will get your money's worth at a good low price.
