Great quality, heavy, one killer detail
[Updated] Added one star as the killer detail is going to be OK with some rework.Overview:***** Looks - this is personal of course** price - genuine Yamaha** weight (6kg or about 13lbs)***** Solidity / rigidity**** Function* See detail belowNow for the details:First the obvious good: it looks good with a beautiful black finish, it is functional, easy to install (about 30 minutes without rushing). It provides a very solid and rigid platform for luggage, going all the way to anchor at the pillion foot pegs. This is great as the back of the Tenere700 is all part of the frame and anyone overloading luggage and riding roughshod off road could bend the frame without this added stiffness. That's a problem I predict to many people using other rear rack systems although admittedly Yamaha did not skimp on the material. It also provides with two very solid handles at the back of the motorcycle for the pillion or to lift the motorcycle in case of, er, undesired landing. If you ride off road you know the kind. All this good comes at two prices: the $$ and the weight.Of these two the worst is the weight, as it is placed rear and high. Not dramatic, though, and I knew what to expect when I ordered the rack. Then there is a major flaw:The anchor points at the pillion foot pegs protrude out far enough that they touch the bottom of my calf when I am standing with the ball of my feet on the rider foot pegs. Not when I am seatedNot when I am using the front brake or shifting gearNot when I am in "attack position" off roadBut as soon as I am standing straight(ish) to rest, or, worse, putting my weight backward in technical terrain, it comes in contact with my leg about a foot above my soles, thankfully just below the top edge of my touring boots. As you can see on the picture the protrusion is wide enough to hold the boot in place - that's the part with the two bolts just behind it.The contact is rough enough that I am not sure my kevlar riding jeans will withstand it for long. This means I won't consider riding with this rack as is without at least these boots. Hmmm.So here it is:I will look into adding a protection on these protrusion - I have been considering adding some sort of rubber calf rest to allow better position control when riding down hill standing and these would be placed about right where these protrusions are.If this works, I keep the rack.If not I dismantle it and I send it back. Had it been less expensive I would have considered keeping it but as it stands, I can't have $369 just sitting on my shelves.
