A Path Foward
As a self-taught Folk/Rock rhythm guitarist, when I started to learn Music Theory and scales I opened whole new world for myself. I am old enough (84) to enjoy music from "The Great American Songbook" era and decided Jazz would be the best way to enjoy playing these songs. This book can bring you from basic music theory, through scale forms and triads and on into dominant 7th, major and minor 9th, 11th and 13th chords and into Modes, gently, step by step, along with practice tips and a CD to demonstrate what the author is talking about. But practice tips have to be used; there is no magic to reduce practice time. Believe me, I tried for years to find it. I have been told that the journey to Jazz is a long one and I believe this book is a great one to take me (and you) the first few miles while enjoying the trip.

Lot of good stuff here.
Jody Fisher offers a lot to learn from in all his books. This will get you going with the most important techniques, scales and arpeggios for improv and gives some introduction to advanced arpeggio substitutions for adding extra textures to your solos. No one book can cover everything about jazz improvisation but this is a great one for providing the fundamentals.

As a newbie into jazz guitar this is a great introduction. I especially like how he requires you to learn to read music and omits tab from the book. A great learning tool and I highly recommend it.
