“Guardians of the Galaxy – Here we make our stand” collects issues #6-12 of Al Ewing’s Guardians. There are two (or three if you count the Star Lord issue in the middle as a stand-alone, or four if you count the opening Nova one as a stand-alone) stories here, the opening one seeing a/the Galactic Council meeting to discus the effect of the founding of the Kree/Skrull Empyre, which quickly turns into a murder mystery when Noh-Varr (“It’s Marvel Boy”) is found standing over not one but two dead bodies. In a room full of telepaths and shape-shifters, who can you call to sort it all out?Cue 80’s music and Rocket in his red shirt and trenchcoat…This then, via the rebirth of the original Star-Lord (I was there, I remember it!) we are into a “King in Black” crossover, interrupted by the return of the Greek Gods from the previous volume looking for revenge and their power back, which eventually leads into that Galactic Council from the front of the book deciding to do something about the Guardians:Ambassador Super-Skrull: “…the Guardians are an ad-hoc group of mercenaries and trauma survivors operating out of bars and hospital facilities”.Cue 80s music; and those old uniforms.I have said many times in recent reviews that Al Ewing has managed to capture and bottle “cosmic”, and this is either a return to something or other, or a new dawn for Marvel cosmic stuff, superbly illustrated, and recapturing the scope of the Guardians at their best (and with several references to their previous best just to remind us), with much character development among the team also just to put a cherry on the top. Too often we get big cosmic adventures that are all-action and not enough ‘people’ stuff. This is not one of those times. On to volume three!
