The Mighty Quinn

It was bad, but ....
when Denzel started to sing, that was it. Clicked "X" and closed the window. What a sad, stupid flick. Starring Denzel Washington had to mean something, right? Wrong. Kept expecting it to get better right up until I couldn't stand a minute more. The actress chosen to play Quinn's wife did not help the situation. Ok, so most of the actors/actresses didn't improve the movie either. A boat anchor right out of the gate. I wish I had done as planned before I started watching. Go to bed early. That would have been time better spent.

Life's just too short to waste time watching this
HOW ON EARTH DID THIS GET 4.1 STARS?OK, so old movies go at a different editing pace, fine. I'm patient. But the director and editor decided it was a good idea to "explain" to the audience with little extra close up shots every detail (important in their view) to the action shot or to the plot, as if they needed to explain what is already a simple action film.Denzel Washington's jamaican accent gets in the way, and the director's poor choices make the flow of what might have been a fun mindless movie, choppy. I really did try to watch this, but couldn't get further than 25 minutes. Life's just too short to waste time watching this.

A YOUNG (1989) DENZEL WASHINGTON FILM - Not Too Bad
This is not an Academy Award winning film not is it Denzel's best ever performance. HOWEVER, it is well done - regardless of other opinions. Yes, it is a bit on the languid side but that is supposed to reflect life in the Tropics were it is often sweltering as well as the fact a true homicide investigation does not usually get solved rapidly especially when things aren't as they initially appear.Yes, it's an old plot line just in a different setting. But it has good actors & with 2 exceptions the play their roles well even if they are often stereotypic.I enjoyed the movie even with all it's flaws & it was refreshing to see a young Denzel Washington The Reggae musical background was a refreshing change.Could it have been better? Of course - most movies could be. The point is if you don't mind a slow paced film, it's worth watching. I found myself wanting to know more about the area of where the film was made. It was the 1st time I'd actually listened to numerous Reggae music & discovered I rather like it.So, take a chance & watch it.

Adventure-filled, modern myth set in Caribbean
In this adventure-filled modern myth set in the Caribbean, it was interesting to see actors Denzel Washington and Robert Townsend earlier in their careers. I found the provincial backdrop refreshing: most American films today employ larger-than-life settings, far from the lifestyle of the average American. This folkloric tale reminds of the enduring power of lifelong friendships and the balancing act hometown heroes sometimes face regaining trust. The story also highlights the well-known, often underestimated advantage of fighting on your own turf.

So Many Kinds of Wrong
This is the fist time I ever stopped watching a movie because I was embarrassed for the people who were in it.Cool Runnings mashed up with Another 48hrs. You laugh when it's supposed to be serious and you grimace when when you're not laughing. On a purely trivial note: You do get to hear Denzel attempt a Jamaican accent (some of the time ; )

Rich setting puts the movie above normal cop thrillers
The Mighty Quinn is a murder mystery featuring Denzel Washington as Police Chief Xavier Quinn. A man is murdered in his hotel room and immediately all the powerful people are trying to hush it up. Quinn is also suspicious because the powers that be automatically blame his friend Maubee (Robert Townsend). The movie provides a rich environment, which raises it above the usual cop film. There’s Quinn’s family. All the neighborhood characters. The rich whites that control the economy. The governor who is beholden to them. Plus some good Reggae music.C

Charming, lighthearted movie.
This movie was just what I needed--a beautiful, colorful setting, great music--by the way, two of Bob Marley's daughters sing in the movie--good actors--including the character actors. It was like a Preston Sturges screwball comedy joined to a cop movie. Denzel was a quite a sight in his white dress uniform--just mentioning. And best of all, a high school friend, Vincent Patterson was the choreographer! Discovered this by watching the closing credits because I was too lazy to get up.....

You won't see nothing like the Mighty Quinn
I thought the title reminded me of a song. I heard it on the radio when Manfred Mann did it and the movie was made thirty years ago. So the song came long before the movie. Yes, the music on this movie is excellent. I do like the action and violence but, oddly, it is the music and the people that I really like. I am also very grateful that this was reformatted for 16:9 TV. I appreciate getting this as a recommendation from Amazon Prime Video in email earlier today.

Carribean Cool
I remember watching this film years ago. Unlike many it doesn't seem to get repeated which is a shame. In some respect it is a standard form police thriller, murder, various suspects, weary detective etc. What makes it a bit different is the setting a tropical island. For all I know it is wholly unrepresentative of life in the carribean, but it seems convincing without going for stereotypes.I really enjoyed the Mighty Quinn, it doesn't try to explain everything and the characterisations are helped by having that unknown element. The performances are excellent and Denzel delivers as he always does, utterly convincing in one of his less edgy roles.crack open the rum sit back and wish you were there!

Early Washington
Bought it for the up and down road gag which was the only thing I could remember from first seeing it years ago. Early Washington so fun to see.

Comedy with a hint of seriousness
The film is enjoyable but does lose impact as it tries to get you to embrace the Caribbean way of life. Probably paints the wrong picture to the hard working Police enforement men and women in the Caribbean.

Typical Denzel Washington
The depth of 'political comment' is typical Washington and done so very well, that makes all think beyond the Entertainment value
