Decent Buildup, Probably Should've Been a TV Series
I honestly enjoyed this movie more than I expected. The worldbuilding was decent and the witch's magical abilities were used in unique ways. The acting was great, with the likes of Vin Diesel, Elijah Wood, Rose Leslie, and Michael Caine. And the pacing was decent, with every downtime scene being used for worldbuilding, allowing the action scenes to exist as just crazy, sword and fantasy fun. The cgi effects don't come into play too often and when they do, they look decent. And it doesn't matter if you're watching the dvd/Blu-ray version as I've watched the DVD version on my 4K UHD television and it still looks great. I would say the movie's biggest problem is the time constraint. There was a lot introduced that felt like it would was being introduced to be fleshed out a later time. It kind of felt like a high budget pilot to a tv series with everything it introduces. I do appreciate that they go about with the main character already being aware of how the world and the magic works. And as viewer I wanted to know more about all of it. Which is why I feel like it was meant to have either a sequel or a tv series following it to do so. Clearly that didn't happen, but despite that, I still feel that the movie alone is enjoyable enough. And it doesn't leave any loose ends with the characters' arcs, so it doesn't feel unfinished, just like as I said, like it was setting up to be a franchise.

... have such an issue with this movie as I enjoyed it thoroughly
Not sure why the critics have such an issue with this movie as I enjoyed it thoroughly. The niche that this movie is trying to fit into (dark fantasy) is a tough one and the movie does an exceptional job of blending action with imagination. If you watch the short animated films that go with this movie and learn more of the backstory, you will see that they did a great job of building a fictional history for the antagonists/protagonists and the characters were given meaning and histories. This isn't an extravagant Peter Jackson LOtR or Hobbit trilogy-type epic and it isn't pretending to be. Nor is this a hack & slash romp like Van Helsing but instead is a well crafted, well acted and very entertaining movie if you have what so many critics seem to be lacking these days...an imagination. The costumes and sets were perfect for the film and the interaction between the main characters (other than a somewhat weak performance by Elijah Wood) were very entertaining to watch. And yes, I grew up in the 70's and early 80's playing D&D so I can see where Vin Diesel is coming from with his character. Here's one viewer that is hoping for a sequel.

Last Witch Hunter
I love the movie. Nice crisp picture. The packaging was great. I love it when the studios put a slipcover over a steelbook.

There seems to be a glut of movies coming out lately where you seem to wait an age before you can understand, or even like the characters, or wait for the story, to start. .............. "SO THANK HEAVENS FOR THIS ONE!". This is a good film and I found myself intrigued with it after just 5 minutes. There is so much going on at the start and it carries on throughout the movie...................MAYBE SPOILERS AHEAD! . Vin Diesel is well cast as the Witch Hunter who has been cursed with eternal life and now works for the church in finding and vanquishing witches. How he became cursed happens at the beggining in dramatic style. The other actors add to the scenes and take nothing away. The atmosphere is dark and gothic and the whole movie is well shot. i think one of my favourite scenes is the boy and the tree. " I'm trying not to give anything away here! " There will be a sequel and i believe it is already in the making. Yes, this is a good movie which I would watch again. Something I can't say about most films that are turned out these days

I'd probably give it a 4 and a 1/2, but since I can't, I'm giving it a 5. It's definitely better than JUST a 4, for me. The Last Witch Hunter is surprisingly good, and has far more to it than I expected, considering the dreadful reviews I'd read elsewhere. It's an excellent fantasy film, with some interesting characters. Vin actually does rather well, especially when partnered with Michael Caine, and Rose Leslie also makes for a very nice leading lady. She's quite capable in her own right, as a character, but the actress herself is attractive without being a 'perfect super model', which makes a change. As for the main villain, she is appropriately nasty and looks great, with some superb (physical, not CG!) makeup (You'll be surprised what she really looks like, if you watch the making-of!). It strikes the right balance between character, adventure and story, so that it never feels as though you're being skimped on any particular aspect. On the other hand, it introduces a world that could quite easily be expanded on, if the planned sequel ever gets made (probably not, given the box-office, but it's possible). If I had one complaint, **POSSIBLE SPOILER** it would be that the villain required more than one or two followers trying to bring about her return. It needed to feel as though a larger group were waiting in the shadows. That's a minor complaint, though. The film also has a great score by Steve 'Transformers' Jablonsky, that doesn't sound too much like his previous work. It's got a couple of nice themes going on, and has some effective softer moments in addition to the action. I can honestly say I thoroughly enjoyed The Last Witch Hunter, which had a bit of depth to its characters and story, unlike so many of the vacuous superhero movies being churned out at the moment.
