Can't really say I hate this record though part of me really wants to. `Slip of the Tongue' is to me the nadir of Whitesnake's hallowed career. It is the epitome of the crass commercialism of the hair metal era. The ultimate indignity is suffering by one of the great Whitesnake songs. Now I really don't get the whole "let's cover one of my older songs" thought process but it had worked for Coverdale on his monster selling previous record as both "Crying in the Rain" and mega hit "Here I Go Again" were reworked for the MTV Generation. However "Fool for Your Loving" is a travesty! This is one of my all-time favorites and it is bludgeoned into oblivion in its 1989 incarnation. All is not lost as `Slip' does include "Judgment Day" and "Now You're Gone" is pretty good. I really don't like much else on this disc except perhaps the title track. Maybe three stars is too high of a rating? I don't know, but David Coverdale soon after put the band on hold as he wondered what the heck he was going to do in the Nineties as his classy trash brand of metal was suddenly passé.

Liner notes say it all
This is a great CD but could have had a much better sound. Coverdale says in the liner notes that it could have had a "warmer" tone and he is right. Vai does tend to go on the treble side even on his own albums and I don't know what he would have had that control on this one too. I still love his playing but it doesn't sound or feel like a real Whitesnake album. I was thinking that on this deluxe version they could have included a second disc with an alternate mix of the album that has that tone Coverdale was seeking.

The music was excellent. It sure took me back in the rocking eighties era. The guitar riffs kept me in total suspense. I really recommend this CD to other metal musicians and listening enthusiasts. Brad Morgan

Incredible album.
Steve Vai and David Coverdale together on one album. The rest of the band are on form of course, it's Whitesnake after all. I don't care what anyone says about this album, it's up there with 1987 for me, it rocks. Superb. Some said Vai didnt fit with Whitesnake... 100% wrong, he fit perfectly.

A superb listen.
I'm rather ashamed to say, but I didn't buy this in 1989 on the strength of it getting a bit of a slating in Metal Hammer. I believed everything written in that mag, but I've grown up a bit now.Anyway, a great opening track, followed by the classic "Judgement Day". Decent fill in tracks, such as "Kittens Got Claws". But the best is saved for last. "sailing Ships" is brilliant! One tiny moan. I still can't take "Fool For Your Loving" seriously. It's so pale compared to the Ready an' Willing version.
