Another great fountain pen from Pilot.
The Pilot Custom 743 isn’t flashy, and that’s exactly the point. Its classic black, cigar-shaped design is clean, timeless, and purposeful. This pen is about solid build quality, reliability, and everyday performance, highlighted by Pilot’s excellent 14K gold nib. I own several Pilot pens and keep coming back to them because they’re consistently smooth, dependable writers—and the Custom 743 lives up to that reputation. Ink capacity is good with the CON-70 converter, and Pilot ink cartridges are also an option if you prefer them. I tend to favor larger pens for comfort, and this one fits my hand very well. The grip shape and diameter make long writing sessions easy, with no fatigue or hand cramping. Overall, this is a pen I can recommend without hesitation.

The Perfect Nib on the Perfect Pen.
For me, the Pilot Custom 743 just may be the perfect pen. Substantially the same design and the same 14K nib of the much-vaunted Custom 823, but with a converter instead of the vacuum fill. For the 743, that makes it easier to clean (with a pen syringe) and the best ink capacity of any converter out there. Not as much capacity as the vacuum fill, but to paraphrase a 16th Century Italian playwright, 'One should do with lovers exactly as one does with ink colours*: Have many, enjoy them one at a time, and change often.' I already had the 743 in Verdigris with the M nib, which writes fantastically. Still, I heard so many good things about the ~15 different nib options you can get with the 743 (but only in Black), that it left me wondering what might still be there to discover. After doing a bunch of research on the qualities of each nib variant I settled on the SFM, or soft fine-medium. From its description, the SFM has a finer line than the medium (but not as thin as 'fine', which depending on the paper can feel scratchy to me), and a bit of 'bounce' as the nib flows across the page. I was a bit hesitant to order it from Amazon Japan, but I needn't have worried. It arrived in about two weeks and was more than worth the wait. The pen itself is light in the hand, which makes long writing sessions a pleasure and no fatigue. It also takes a lighter touch to fully appreciate what the soft nib has to offer in terms of bounce across the page, but once you make the adjustment it barely feels like you're pressing at all, and the words simply flow. I originally shied away from Black as a bit boring compared to the Verdigris, but it has also grown on me, looking understated yet refined. And the 14K SFM nib is worth the price of admission all on its own. If you can only own one fountain pen, this is it. *the original quote says 'clothes' here. But it holds true for fountain pens (and ink), so Guarini will forgive me.

It’s a beautiful writer - smooth and well behaved
One of my favs. Prefer the soft fine for regular use but this soft medium is beautiful, too. It’s a Pilot, it’s a wonderful pen if it’s in your price range

Flexy nib, goes from extra-fine to approximately medium-broad when flexed
This is a high quality pen that feels good in the hand. It's classic black and gold. The cap screws off and posts nicely, and the pen feels balanced when you do post or even if you don't. The star of this show is the Falcon nib, which is soft to write with normally and flexes beautifully - though not a lot. It goes from extra-fine to approximately medium-broad when you flex it, and that's enough for normal sized writing. Because it starts off as extra-fine, there's some slight feedback when writing normally. If you like a glassy-smooth writing experience, you may want to try before you buy. I've gotten used to the feedback and appreciate how small I can write (which is my tendency) without the lower case Os or Ds filling in. In retrospect, since this pen can be had with such a wide variety of nibs, I might have gotten this with a soft medium-fine instead of Falcon and might have gotten the Falcon on another pen, but I guess that means I'll have to buy another one at some point. Oh well! LOL

Awesome pilot pen, great Amazon 2nd chance find
It's always a bit nerve wracking to order something as delicate and personal as a pen as an Amazon 2nd Chance item. This exceeded expectations. Original packaging had clearly been carefully opened but was undamaged. Pen was not inked prior, and the nib and section are absolutley Pilot Factory perfect. Pilot size 743 Custom has a much nicer, more flexible gold nib than my current well traveled Pilot 742 Custom. Just fits my large hand perfectly, and is a smoother writer even with fine medium nib than my Pelikan M1000. Push botton Converter works flawlessly, and holds enough ink for several weeks of journaling. What a pleasure! Great clear, fine line, not a bit hesitant or scratchy - just a wonderful, pleasant writing experience.

Awesome pen
Very good quality pen. A bit pricey but I guess that is what we have to pay to get the quality of it. Both myself and my daughter love it.

Flawless Writer, Waverly nibs fit my writing style perfectly.
The pen writes beautifully, and was definitely worth the price, it did take a little longer than normal to ink using a cartridge but I think that had more to do with the cartridge than the pen itself, once it was inked I tried the pen at various angles and it worked flawlessly. On a negative note, when the pen arrived I was a little taken aback to see that the pen was outside of the case, my first assumption was that perhaps it had slipped out during shipping, but after removing the wrapping I found that that only way this could have happened was for it to have been physically taken out of the box. Fortunately Amazon boxed this item instead of putting it in one of their bubble wrap envelopes so it did make the journey unscathed, if you plan to order, it may be wise to add some delivery instructions to help ensure your pen doesn't get damaged.

High quality pen, heavy, smooth.
Super well built. Nib dances across your page. Perfectly calibrated ink flow. Won’t puke ink everywhere. It’s just too heavy for me to use as a drawing tool. Returned mine but will work great for someone liking heavier pens and semi-flex nib.

The pen body is the most ergonomic of all Pilots I own. It has the nicest fit and finish. Many people have troubles with the FA nib, so I had immediate remorse after ordering it and tried to cancel. Fate deigned that I was to have it anyway, and my request didn't go through. I'm glad, because it has become my favourite pen among my 10 premium pens. It writes EF with no pressure, F with just a little, and of course has dramatic flex. I haven't had the hard-starting issues many people claim. I can only offer a few guesses to help people who might be interested in this pen still. 1. Don't use the con-70. I have used con-70 to success with PO nib, and to dramatic failure with Stub, I didn't even bother using it for the FA. Just use a con-50. 2. Don't draw those silly loops to demo the flex. You will probably go too fast, too hard, and get railroading and miss-align the tines. 3. Just write in your normal style, and press a little on the down strokes. You will get plenty of contrast in the line weight. Normal writing is much less demanding than those loops FP users like to make, and will be much gentler on the FA nibs very delicate tines. One of the reasons this has become my favourite pen is that it writes EF but is incredibly smooth, just just for EF but it is absolutely smooth. Even if I didn't care about flex, that alone would make it rank up with my favourites, including the PO nib (which is also very smooth, but is more like a technical pen in its consistency). This pen has a very bad reputation, but none of the issues about ink flow, hard starting or railroading have befallen me. I write fairly small, and I'm very pleased with the effect I can get. It is much, much softer than the Falcon/Elabo Pilot makes, which although a remarkably light pen, I find the Elabo really hurts my fingers if I use the flex too much. I have no such problem from the FA.

Item was packed well and arrived safely. Love the posting nib, it allows me to write so thinly!

avec une plume en or aujourd'hui introuvable : souple, douce et qui ne manque jamais. Le stylo est bien étanche et ne sèche pas. La finition est impeccable. C'est mon stylo préféré ! Mais il n'est pas donné ...
