A Guide Book of Gold Dollars (The Official Red Book)

Bowers Did It Again
Q. David Bowers has shown us why he is the "Dean of Numismatics" with this book. He goes through every date from 1849 - 1889 and lets the reader know which ones are common, scarce, and rare. Certain dates are struck with more eye appeal than others and he takes you back in time with the history of each coin and what was happening non numismatically in the United States and around the world.I have just about every book David has written and this is actually my second copy, so if I'm repeating myself with this review please forgive me. Certified population is given for every mint and date, and his writing style just makes the book flow. Characteristics of striking and die notes are included with each issue and I'm sure only Bowers and a handful of other coin guys have that put to memory.Clashmarks and planchets are covered and the Forward is by the late and great gold dollar specialist David Akers. Red Book prices are also included as are logotypes, which is one of the first things I look for to make sure a coin is genuine. Great gold coin collectors such as Harry Bass, Virgil Brand, and Angelo Wright are mentioned, demonstrating that there can be an investment side to coin collecting. A great book in my opinion.

Recomended Reading for Anyone Interested in this Subject.
I thoroughly enjoy these books from Whitman publishing as it combines historical facts around the coinage and the events that took place during the time period the coins were minted. The book comes with a price list but this obviously becomes dated over time and in some cases does not reflect actual market prices but it is a nice addition to the information provided on the coin series.
