Play On: Now, Then, and Fleetwood Mac: The Autobiography

Thanks for Playing On
Similar to many other musician's stories, Mick Fleetwood tells of many an adventure on the way to fame and the dream of success...but at what price? This book was very well written and the honesty in the way those stories were expressed left me sad, happy, and excited at the most appropriate times. The book was difficult to set aside and is a highly recommend read!

Interesting and detailed story, from his point of view.
I read this book consecutively with Jenny Boyd's memoir, and it was interesting to see the same events from two points of view. Mick is mostly honest and up front about his faults and the toll that drug use and ego can take on relationships. He does go a bit easy on himself in certain situations where Jenny was more explicit about his selfishness and cruelty (and perhaps vice versa), but that's to be expected. Fans of Fleetwood Mac will appreciate the detail about life with the band and their interpersonal relationships. There was not a great deal of in depth discussion of the actual songs and their creation, other than a few lines like "This song was about Stevie's friend Sara" or "Jenny came up with the title of this song." Overall, Mick is a good writer and the flavor of the era shines through.

What a life !
I love, loved, loved this book! I have to confess, I never really bothered with Fleetwood Mac. Sure,I knew some of their songs, not all the words, but they were never on my radar. Then, in November of 2014, Mick Fleetwood was a guest on the CBS morning news to talk about his autobiography. I took a chance and bought the book, purely because Mick was so interesting in the interview! It turned out to be a fantastic purchase. I enjoyed this as much as Keith Richards autobiography, and that's saying a lot ! Mick is totally candid throughout the book, talking about his failures, triumphs, vices and addictions. From playing drums in his sister's garage, to meeting Peter Green and John McVie, to the formation and super stardom of Fleetwood Mac. It is an absolutely enthralling read and a biography that should be on everyone's shelf! After reading about the Rumours album in the book, I bought it to see if it's as good as everyone said it is...It is now one of my favourite albums ! Highly recommended ! If you like Fleetwood Mac, or just really good biographies, this is an excellent choice !

Gloss with bits of truth here and there
Mick is a strange, charming, manipulative, talented and obsessive guy who did his best to create an income stream for himself with this 2nd autobiography and reveal what he wanted to reveal about Fleetwood Mac. It is perfectly in line with his view of Fleetwood Mac fans as "punters." For those of us who bought the book hoping for more detail about the the grittiness that fueled the band's upward and downward spirals, you won't find that here. I would suggest Stephen Davis' Gold Dust Woman for more of the truth behind the surface. His biography about Stevie is unauthorized and contains some puzzling errors, but for the most part rings true. Mick's does not. Mick isn't going to share the worst parts of the truth, because he is fiercely protective of the band's legacy. But he does explain some of the choices he made because he feels Fleetwood Mac is all he knows how to do. And it helps to understand that.Even though he glosses over so many of the worst points in their history, my stomach was still in knots reading about how stressful it was to be in that band. How did they stand it and what toll did it take? You'll find some of those answers here, but he steers around most of their truth. And for that, he only gets 3 stars. And I thought about 2 stars.

What a wild ride
Very awesome book I didn't know a whole lot about the Peter green years of Fleetwood Mac so that I found interesting as well as much of the drama that went on in this band during their hey day it's really a amazing life by a amazing drummer and personality

No Rumours Mick Tells All
My likes & dislikes revolving around Fleetwood Mac never truly included Mick Fleetwood. But, seeing as he started the band & was present for every member, song, session, concert, rehearsal trial & tribulation it is only fitting that he feature himself in this books journey. Sometimes maudlin, sometimes patronizing but never truly angry Fleetwood takes on a wild & insightful trip through the history of Fleetwood Mac. Certainly a good read for fans.

Great. Play on. Read on.
How presumptuous of that first reviewer to say nothing new save your money buy a ticket to a show instead. In college my roommate and I started most festivities to that great intro on the live album intro to Monday morning. Almost 30 years ago. I've picked up a fair bit of fan knowledge along the way. There are plenty of cool things in this book that was new for me. We took college age daughter last year to see them and she has seen lots of big name current groups and artist shows and by far she love the Mac the best. And we have our tickets for the Atlanta show this year. And we 'll probably all have read the book by then too.

Interesting Book
I got the book quickly and it was packaged nicely too. I enjoyed the book but got real tired of Mick patting himself on the back so much for always being the one who was keeping the band together. Even tho he admits that he neglected his wife and kids always choosing the band over his family, he should have just let her go and stayed married to his band. He would have caused far less pain but he was too selfish. He is a brilliant drummer and I love the early Fleetwood Mac, it was more rooted in the Blues than the Buckingham/Nicks era.

Wonderful insight.
I really enjoyed learning about Mick and the band. How the interplay produced such great tunes, which still echo today. It was sad to finish the book but im glad i read it.

I spent an entire day reading this…
…because I couldn’t put it down!!Mick‘s book is truly enchanting. He and Anthony Bozza really created a magical piece of literature. First it takes you back into Britains music scene of the 60s and you wish nothing more than to have been there. He always mentions names of people he‘d associated with along the years — familiar names, if you are into such a thing you‘ll love it. The book then slowly progresses into an in depth investigation into the band called FleetwoodMac and there couldn’t be anything more exciting. John, Chris, Stevie, Lindsey — they are all there. While obviously primarily focusing on his own path, Mick gives us little tid bits of their stories and their lives as well. The book was written with so much love and self reflection, it is a must-read for every FMac fan and appreciator of the Rock & Roll. If you have ever wished you were born earlier and could have been there, ‘Play On‘ is your chance to feel it all — if only for a while.

A rock and roll story
This is a biography of Fleetwood Mac told through the words of their drummer Mick Fleetwood.. I read a lot of these rock and roll biographies and this is one of the better ones I have read. I was particularly interested in Peter Green and their is a lot about him. Mick writes well and is very frank about himself. I read most of this in one session.
