Vicious outlaw Jose Esqueda (Anthony Quinn) lives by what he calls the law of the bullet, terrorizing ranchers in post-Civil War Texas. At his side is his longtime enforcer and gunman, his adopted brother Rio (Robert Taylor). But Rio's allegiance, already wavering, may change for good after he meets recently arrived rancher King Cameron (Howard Keel) and after he finds that King's stunning bride (Ava Gardner) is drawn to him. In the same year as this brooding, brawling tale of the West, versatile star Robert Taylor would be seen in other virile roles as a man of the sea in All the Brothers Were Valiant and as valorous Lancelot in Knights of the Round Table. John Farrow (also busy that year seeing action with Botany Bay, PlunderUnder the Sun and the especially impactful Hondo) directs.

Just an okay western
I love westerns, and I've always thought Robert Taylor made a good cowboy, and a lady friend of mine loves Ava Gardner, so I bought this one for us to watch. Anthony Quinn stands out as a psychotic Mexican bandit, and Robert Taylor does a good job as a tight-lipped philosophical cowboy, but poor Ava Gardner spends most of her time leaning her head back to stare up at Howard Keel. This is the least of the Robert Taylor westerns I've seen. I really like Westward the Women, The Law and Jake Wade and Many Rivers to Cross.Ride Vaquero! is good enough if you're in the mood for a western and don't have any better choices. And it's worth watching to think about the nature of westerns. The best westerns are about overcoming adversity. Howard Keel won't back down, but he's never heroic. Robert Taylor plays a reluctant bandit who refuses to commit to anything. Ava Gardner gets to be little more than arm candy. It's only Anthony Quinn who plays a crazy killer that has any passion and love for life, but he only tears things down. Westerns are about men and women building something in the wilderness, and Howard Keel fits the western hero role, but the movie doesn't focus on him. The bigger movies stars steal the story.

A passable western
This film has great stars which was typical of MGM films of the 1950's. Robert Taylor is one of my favorite actors, Ava Garder is very beautiful, and Howard Keel is O.K. But Anthony Quinn was acting over the top. Was a Mexican supposed to be like this? Shouting, gesticulating, emoting like a wild animal? You have to notice him when he is on the screen. Contrast him with Taylor. I prefer the minimal acting type of Taylor. There are many kind of love stories. The greatest one is between Quinn and Taylor, though mainly Quinn shows it. It is sometimes hard to understand the motivations of these people. There is a priest who talks about peace (do not kill!), but he is using guns like everybody else. Maybe motivation is not important in this kind of classy western. It is a watchable film, but not a great one (I give five stars only to Rio Bravo, Warlock and Magnificent Seven).

Great western with really great starts
Loved the chemistry between Ava Gardner and Robert Taylor. Also Anthony Quinn was great in his part as the bad bandit with somewhat of a heart.

Good vs. evil...time after time
Good western about two brothers -- a gringo and a Mexican child. Together they become bandits and thieves until the gringo reforms. Good castincluding Robert Taylor, Ava Gardner, Anthony Quinn and Howard Keel. Good sets, costumes and scenery. A "class act" motion picture.

Ava is splendid
Who could ask for anything more...a classic western that also included Ava Gardner. Although Robert Taylor and Howard Keel gave good performances it is Ava who dominates the picture...even though Anthony Quinn tries to dominate by his tendency to overact.

RIDE VAQUERO
This movie was first released in 1953(2010), runs 90 minutes in full screen 1.33.1 and in technicolor. The picture and sound quality is good and the only extra is TRAILOR IN B/W! The movie starts ith Jose Esqueda(ANTHONY QUINN) making an announcement to his people that the whiteman's war between north and south was now over and that they will now be busy fighting the Indians. So now he and his men will go and burn any new ranches being built. Jose's adopted brother, Rio (ROBERT TAYLOR) is called in, and asked by Jose to take some money for the priest. Cordelia Cameron(AVA GARDNER) arrives on the boat with father Antonio(KURT KASZNAR) and her husband King Cameron(HOWARD KEEL) comes to collect her. Rio also sees her and father Antonio, who refuses to take any gift from Jose. On arrival, Camerons find their house burnt and cattle killed, and goes straight to the sheriff. Jose arrives there too, claiming he had come to see the dentist, and had nothing to do with burning of Cameron's place. Cameron holds a meeting in the church, to discuss what to do about Jose problem. Jose and Rio also attend. Cameron builds another house with stone and is attacked again. This time Cameron fights back and chases Rio and arrests him. He persuades Rio to help him bring horses back from Mexico. Rio saves Cameron's life at the river crossing. When they get back, Jose is there waiting for them. Jose is also not pleased to see Rio not on his side. Cordelia tries to talk sense into Jose. Barton (JACK ELAM), Jose's man is not keen on Rio. Rio is arrested by the sheriff and Jose gets all his army and marches on to the town. How will it end? Why is Rio called 'Rio'? Why did Rio change sides? How will Jose react? Will the Army help? Will brother fight against his adopted brother? Will Rio lead the sheriff or the Army to Jose?Anthony Quinn is just as much 'loud' as Robert Taylor is 'quiet' and Ava Gardner looks good on screen. FRANK FENTON's screenplay is directed very SLOWLY by JOHN FARROW.AVA LAVINIA GARDNER was born on 24.12.1922 in Grabtown, North Carolina, youngest of 7 children. When 15, her father died in 1938. Überzeugender Charakterwestern, leider in dürftiger technischer Qualität

Solid western with a solid cast
This short western story has big stars attached to it. They all do a marvelous job at telling the story of ranchers in the post Civil War Texas era. Robert Taylor is solid as he portrays the desperado with a conscience. Anthony Quinn is his usual self and does a good job at portraying the character of the Mexican bandit. The movie and the story unfold very quickly without any static or dull moment. This is a good film worth having in one's western movie library.

An old but a goody!
This romantic western has two very different men in love with the same woman and in old style one sacrifices his life to save the other man for love. I suppose in todays opinions it’s a bit cheesy but then it was very Ernest Hemingway!
