Not Up To Snuff, Pass this one by!
As an avid documentary freak since the age of sixteen, some thirty odd years now this production is sorely lacking! Too little running time and too much subject matter equal less than adequate information and detail on the subject matter. This video is just a basic overview of the subject matter with little depth or enough detail to maintain a positive interest in continued viewing. Not worth 25 Cents! Cursory overview if you are interested in the subject but don't already know much about it. Production value only average.
I learned a few things from this DVD but overall it is only an average production. The music is somewhat tacky and distracting, and the video material itself is what you would expect for an educational type video. Definitely not Ken Burns by any stretch. I recently re-watched this DVD, and after doing so read the descriptive DVD cover notes to see how well they compared with the contents. Doing so motivated me to write this review because the blurb notes do not seem to reflect the movie I watched. These notes promised:"[Learn] ...how a man was thrown out of the Lincoln Memorial dedication because of the color of his skin. Examine monument graffiti from the 1800's and follow President Nixon to Lincoln's statue for a secret 4 a.m. meeting". Would like to know if someone can supply a time code for all of those things, because I must have blinked when they were shown (I think the racial issue may have been mentioned, but only as an aside!). I think I would have remembered seeing any of these events happen or discussed if they have been given any prominence worth mentioning on the cover notes. Fortunately I did not read the notes until after viewing the DVD or I might have felt let down.
