Spoiler free review - The Shining
Brief intro on Stephen king and Horror books in generalJust completed my second Stephen King novel. The first one was ‘The eyes of the dragon’ which I had read almost 16 years back. I remember laughing over this supposedly horror book because I did not feel any kind of horror. I kept waiting and waiting until the book got over and was left completely clueless about why SK was so popular. And over the years, this belief got solidified. I am a fan of the horror genre in movies but started believing that horror can only be experienced or communicated only through visual form in movies, and never through books.Well, first impressions can be wrong… I don’t know about his other works, but this one was truly a masterpiece. The entire experience of imagining a complete horror story - and those thrilling moments - solely through words on paper is just unbelievable. SK is indeed a master of his craft and after 16 years he has finally won my respect.About the plot (Spoiler free)Jack Torrance (a teacher by profession and a part time writer) has had a sad childhood which lead to his short temper which in turn gets him fired from his job. He is broke financially and emotionally, and his relationship with his wife, Wendy is fragile. He can feel Divorce is just around the corner. He takes up a caretaker job at the Overlook hotel - to make ends meet and also to spend some quality time with his wife and son, Danny (aka Doc). The hotel halts its operations every year for the winter months (October to March) as the weather gets extreme and all routes to the hotel gets blocked by snow. So basically, the Torrance family have got themselves trapped in this hotel which apparently has a history and mystery which is what the book is all about. Also, Danny Torrance is the main character of this story. He has the ‘Shining‘ - a special ability to see things and to read other people’s thoughts.Overall review and ratingThanks to some excellent writing by the author, after reading this book, you will have a clear visual description of the hotel, the snowy fields, the characters, the ghosts and the plot. If you are a fan of horror movies, trust me, you need to read this book. The book’s overall rating on Goodreads is 4.24. But for me, this is a 4.75.. almost perfect!! Highly recommend..

Hibernating with a mad man
For the longest time I shied away from the writings of Steven King; always having considered his stories just “too weird” for my tastes. Then I came across a short story collection and a little tale called “The Body”. Well lo and behold I knew that story; my mind seeing each character as portrayed in “Stand By Me”. Obviously I needed to examine the ‘weird’ storyteller in a much different light. However, before I had a chance to start looking at his written works a young lady begged me - quite literally hands and knees begged me - to take her to see The Shining. ”It’s a Steven King story and it’s wickedly scary and….” she babbled on and on, and, well, the rest is history.I have in succeeding years developed a keen liking for the stories of Mr. King and continue to add his works to my library, this title at long last finding its place among them.As is my usual practice, I offer few details as to plot or story line other than to say it features a family of three (a crazy dad, a terrified mother, and a quite extraordinary little boy) stranded (by choice) in a snowbound resort hotel.Scary? You betcha! But it’s a good kind of scary that, while taking your breath away, still leaves enough air in your lungs to cheer on the good guys. There are many, but The Shining is, I think, one of the weird storyteller’s best.
