Different to the others in the series
I was hesitant to buy this book after reading the comments that say this book is different from the other books written by Donaldson and Scheffler in terms of structure and traditonal storytelling but I wouldn't say that that's a bad thing. The illustrations are great as always and the different scenarios are brilliant for increasing vocabulary. It isn't my favourite book but my 21 month old son has definitely enjoyed and benefited from the interesting structure.

I love this book, and so does my son.
Lots of strangely negative reviews for this book, it's always been one of my favourites to read to my son. It's something a little bit different to the normal Donaldson books but I love it.

Another excellent book by Julia Donaldson. I am a childminder for children ranging in age from 3-6years. I find that it is a bit too complex for the 3/4 year olds, however the 5/6 year old 'get' it. The illustrations are beautiful and very detailed, but a bit too 'finicky' for the younger kids. The story is multi-layered, which the older ones 'get' and find very amusing, but it goes over the heads of the younger ones. The characters are fleeting - I have been asked a number of times "But where's 'such&such' gone?" by the smallies. The repetition, typical of Julia Donalsdon's books, changes just as the children get into the swing of it, which the younger kids find a bit frustrating, BUT the older kids get a kick out of the surprise. It's a book the older kids look for often but the younger ones hardly at all. However, I think it's good to expose children to more complex storytelling from an early age. With that in mind, I would suggest that if you're only starting your young children's library/bookshelf then opt for some of Donaldson's other offerings as you will get far more use out of them. If you are extending a decent collection and wanting to push your children's focus and attention-spans, then this is a great book.I'm still giving it 5 stars, because it IS a wonderful book, for the right target audience. Charlie Cook Favourite book is, in fact, one of MY favourite children's books!

Lovely story read many times
This is just a brilliant story which I am still reading to my son after a few years of buying it. I personally hated the story, finding it overly complicated at first but had to rethink after my son of 5/6 seemed to loved it. The story is clever, by making a story constantly within another story.

OK, so it's not up there with The Gruffalo but ...
OK, so it's not up there with The Gruffalo but I can only really go by what my 3 year old son thinks! He loves it and can recite it end to end! We read a bedtime book every night and this one gets chosen quite a lot. Yes the rhyme takes practice and I'm not mad about the ghost but it's interesting enough. Funny thing is my favourite is A Squash and A Squeeze but my son isn't particularly fond of it! Anyway, I'm glad we bought it and the pictures are fun! The 4 stars are from me (son wants to give it thirteen).
