If you buy this book as a stand-alone from the original book by Siegel, it will still work. As a teacher, I'm loving the idea of communicating with children more on their level, but also helping them to see how their minds are working, and to resolve a problem more effectively.Very often, parents (and yes, teachers) are guilty of telling a child what to do and how to think. An example from the book is a child is upset with their mother for not buying them something. There are two scenarios (in cartoon format) that play out - the mother angrily replies that the child's words are not acceptable, and she is to never talk that way again. The other outcome is that the parent expresses empathy for the child's emotions, and talks about ways to work through the feelings. This is part of "Name it to tame it", one of the steps outlined in the book.Siegel does a good job of explaining how a child's brain develops, and how we are more likely to reach them if we keep this in mind.
