I ordered the moon print but I got the denim color instead
The pillow is great but I ordered the moon print. I got the denim color instead. No big deal since it’s function is what matters but still, it sucks.

It's OK. Probably better than most, but I'm still looking....
Well, this is an ok camping pillow, but I'm not so sure it will be the last camping pillow I ever try out. It is nice and soft to the touch. But it is quite thin, so not so great for side-sleepers and also you can't adjust it in any way. It's also a bit lumpy, consisting of off-cuts of Thermarest's foam filling that they otherwise use in their insulated mattresses. It weighs 200g. This is heavy for ultralightweight backpackers (myself included), but if it gave a good night's sleep then it would be worth it. Also it compresses into a roll (it rolls into itself and is retained by cinching up a drawstring), but the roll is about 12" long and the same diameter as a sports water bottle. It takes up a fair bit of room in the pack.Contrast this with the Sea-to-Summit air pillow that I was using before - weighs 25g and stuffs into a little sack about the size of an egg - but it isn't as comfortable as the Thermarest pillow. No matter how much or little you inflate it, it hurts your ear when side-sleeping. Roll over, sure, but then the other ear hurts after a while - and so on, all night long.Next up - I'm going to look at the EXPED REM pillow, which is a combination of an inner core inflatable pouch and an outer compression layer, with a soft outer against the skin. The inner pouch can be inflated to suit the size you want. Overall it is about 190g for the medium and it is about the same size as the Thermarest, but might be a bit more comfy due to the ability to adjust the thickness to suit your preferred sleeping position. It compresses to about the same size as the Thermarest. About £30.Maybe 2x Thermarest pillows would be the solution, but if that's the case, you might as well take the pillow from your bed at home!

Flat as a pancake - poor value for money
For practically £30 I expected a lot more.I have arthritis and sleep apnea and european pillows in hotels are either bolster type or small, and always too " flat".I wanted something a normal(ish) size, that had some support, and would not take up too much space in luggage.Taking a pillow away, or folding hotel pillows into a spare case is just too much trouble: but not sleeping well whilst trying to enjoy a holiday is not much better. This is a good make and the reviews were, for the most part positive, so I gave it a go."Foam expands Big and packs small": neither are accurate. This does not fold much smaller than rolling a standard pillow into itself: which is how this work - it rolls into the flap.I unrolled and left it a couple of hours and "plumped it up", plumped again a few hours later. plumped again the next morning. No plumper, and definitely nothing like the thickness of the pictures: not even as thick as a standard blow up travel pillow. It stays very flat, and there is not enough filling ( lots of small pieces of foam inside) to exand into anything solid - you can feel the gaps throughout, almost as if it has only been half filled.A few reviewers suggested washing it before first use to plump it up, but I did not want to do that and negate the possibility of return. On the plus side, it arrive quickly, in proportionate packaging, it is almost the size of a regular pillow, and the cover is good quality and has a nice feel: but I did not buy it for looks !Sent straight back.

When the pillow arrived I was initially disappointed as it looked half empty and useless
When the pillow arrived I was initially disappointed as it looked half empty and useless. I read the 1 star reviews and agreed with all their comments. So, before packing it up and sending it back I read the instructions from Thermarest which advised airing it for at least 20 minutes. After 2 hours, I finally had a pillow that looked vaguely similar to the plumped up pillows on the Thermarest website. It is remarkably comfortable and for that reason I’ve given it a 4 star rating. To get a better rating, I think the beancounters at Thermarest could have been persuaded to add a few more bits of foam to give it a more luxurious feeling, especially since it’s made from “.....excess foam from the mattress factory”. So Thermarest, do yourselves a favour and stop penny pitching and fill it properly!

OutdoorMinimalist.net
