can it be used with spellbinders nestabilites

Spellbinders Nestabilities can definitely be used with the Sizzix Magnetic Platform. I use it all the time and love it.

Is this platform ALL I need to cut out (very) thin dies? Or, do I need any additional shims? Thank you.

I have been using the platform and the normal two plastic cutting plates. So far I haven't needed any shims. But, remember each machine is different, so if your machine is not as tight in the rollers as mine might be, you may need a shim. I really like this magnetic platform for the wafer thin dies. I don't think you will regret buying one.

does the magnetic platform only come in the short length

Actually, I purchased a longer magnetic platform that the same length as the extended platform. Works great!

Is this a magnetic platform for a big shot?

Yes - I have used it in my Big Shot. However... Be sure that your cutting pads are newer (and flat) otherwise the magnetic pull isn't as strong. I used this product for my Christmas cards and after experiencing the problem above, purchased The Genius Platform system. It was wonderful, didn't cut into the cutting pads and had no issues with the magnetic platform. I would recommend this product over the Sizzix one.
