A must for processing grapes
I tried using the Norpro regular spiral to do 50 pounds of grapes, and shortly into the project, I realized that it just was not going to work. There is a reason Norpro has a separate spiral for grapes. Ha. This is shorter, and the spiral is wider than the regular spiral. The grape skins do not get as dry, but at least they keep moving through the machine with this grape spiral. With the regular spiral, I was cranking about 4-5 cranks, and it would get clogged up. I would have to stop and clean out the hopper, and then clean out the spiral. I did not have to do that with the special grape spiral, so it was worth the extra money to get it. Concord grape season is over here, but I tried it with a few red grapes, and I will look forward to using it with next year's Concords to make grape sauce and juice.

plugged
we did grapes. as other reviewers mentioned you may have to run grapes though a couple times to really press them out. 2 times is ok 3 times and spiral became blocked. What worked the best was to heat the grapes first and mash with a potato masher to soften up the grapes. Then run through the grape spiral. That worked most excellent. Squished out the grapes wonderfully. Never plugged and all that was left was a small pile of seeds and skins. It really squeezed out all the juice.

Great!!
I don't very often write reviews that are over a few words though I think this grape auger is getting a "bad rep". I had to think a few days on wether or not I want to spend $10 on this. I read all the reviews and it did not look promising. Though after processing a batch of grapes from a friends vines, I figured it Had to be better than nothing. So I got it Tuesday and tried it on Wednesday. The grapes I used were homegrown and seeded. This works AWESOME!!Now that I have said that, let me explain. The first time the grapes go through it squeezes the juice out nothing got 'stuck'. It does look like there is a lot of waste, so I ran them through again. This time I got a little thicker juice/pulp mix. So I thought, why not run it through again? This is where the auger starts to get clogged up. Though it is not hard to pop it out and unclog it.Also, this is Very important: Do Not Use The Plunger! Let the grapes go through on their own.

Works great for grapes!
I ran a whole 5 gallon bucket through it! Saved so much time!

Seeded grapes were problematic for me
I was not a happy camper using the grape spiral with the standard fine mesh screen, as instructed in the manual, when processing seeded grapes. As the pulp and seeds made their way to the end of the spiral to be discharged it became compacted within the end of the spiral, creating a log jam. Applying additional pressure with the plunger to feed more grapes into the spiral (thus forcing the pulp out) I just ended up with lots of grape juice squirting out of the back of the body where the crank shaft attaches to the handle, which ran down the side of the cupboard and onto the floor. Needless to say the mess got worse as I removed the screen and spiral to remove the pulp. I suspect the gap between the screen and the end of the grape spiral could not handle the density of the grape skins and seeds as they became more and more compacted as the spacing of the spirals came closer together.I laugh at the manual's basic operations for Grape Juice, "The optional grape spiral (available separately) is specially designed to let you make gallons of delicious grape juice without ever jamming up!" I guess they just left out the fact that most of it will be on the floor if you process grapes with seeds.Because there are a couple of reviews that have been successful using this spiral I likely will give it another go with seedless grapes.... someday.

The correct one for a model 1951
Works as it should with anything with larger seeds.

Does what it should ...
No problems with this spiral on my Norpro "The Original" Sauce Master. I use this spiral with the Norpro "The Original" Pumpkin Screen and the Norpro "The Original" Berry Screen. I use the standard spiral with the Norpro "The Original" Salsa Screen and the standard screen that came with my strainer.I absolutely love my strainer and all of the screens and spirals. I use a large tin-foil type pan that the stores feature around the holidays to catch my sauce and another for the peels. They hold a lot and you can toss them afterward if you don't want to clean them up and store for next time. The Sauce Master and all of it's components have totally changed my life for the better when it comes to canning and preserving the harvest. My time is used much more efficiently now, for relatively little money.
