It is very short and I would recommend it to children
It was a good read however it was quite short and the language wasn’t very complex. I would only recommend it to children as an eye opener but the story and characters themselves were very realistic

I loved this book! The determination and courage of Ayesha to cross the battle-worn green line and navigate through the devastated city and then return was breathtaking. She uses her cunningness to get past the checkpoint, but then, when Ayesha gets stopped in enemy territory it gets you excited. She then uses what Samar teachers her and it makes you think how important Samar is in the story: she helped Ayesha from being caught or worse. The ending shows how horrible the civil war was - worse things could have happened than friendships being split up. All in all it was a fantastic book and I recommend it to everybody.

Realistic and gripping
A teacher friend recommended this little story for our granddaughter, and we read it before passing it on to her. Ayesha describes her dangerous journey across war-torn Beirut in a straightforward, realistic fashion: what drives her, her hopes and fears, her interaction with adults and her view of the environment. This is sketched in expertly: a drop of rain splashing down on the pavement is "as round and dark as an old coin" [p37], while oranges rolling down a deserted street make "a bright stripe of moving colour on the black tarmac" [p79]. Irrespective of whether it's opened by an adult or a child, it's an excellent book.

A Selection of Reviews from Class 5 at Bentinck Primary School
5 Stars. This book is about a girl and her brothers. They are called Ayesha, Ahmed and Latif. They go through a lot of changes because the Lebanese civil war happens and Ayesha’s mum died. Ayesha’s granny takes care of her. Ayesha’s family meet new people. But at sometimes it is sad at first, then it starts to get happy. I liked it because it was exciting, some parts were amazing and it had empathy.________________________________________________________________________________5 StarsI liked the book because there is a girl called Ayesha and she has a lot of courage. She crosses the Green Line to go and help her granny. The book was something I had never seen before and it was a big adventure. I would give the book 5 out of 5. I also like the book because it looks like lots of fun crossing the Green Line.________________________________________________________________________________5 StarsThis story was the best story I’ve ever read yet. This book really impressed me because it’s got lots and lots of adventures in it. But it also has got lots of feelings. Sometimes when you get to the bit where Ayesha’s mother and house blew up it makes you cry. I felt so sad for Ayesha, Latif and Ahmed.I would recommend this book to people from 9 years up. I would not recommend this book to people under 9 years.________________________________________________________________________________3.5 StarsI think that it is okay because it had some good and bad parts in the book. It is a girl called Ayesha that moved to Beirut: in Beirut there is a civil war. Ayesha’s granny gets extremely poorly so she goes across no man’s land, where nobody has ever dared to cross – it splits the 2 religions. This book is more like an adventure book and it needs to include her brothers more. It is neither good or bad.________________________________________________________________________________5 StarsI enjoyed this book because it was a brave book. Ayesha is so brave because her mother has died. Sadly Ayesha’s father has gone away. After her father went away granny started getting sick. When granny’s medicine runs out it starts to get scary. Is Ayesha’s father coming back?________________________________________________________________________________3 StarsOranges in No Man’s Land is an OK book. I gave this 3 stars because Ayesha – the main character – shows a lot of empathy for people around her. In the book Ayesha is a 10 year old girl with no mum and her dad somewhere else, and a civil war surrounding her. She is determined to keep her friends and her family safe. With a high chance of getting killed, she enters the no man’s land to get medicine for her grandma.I think that this book gets a 3 star because I expected more adventure coming back from the search for Dr Leila, and wanting the book to be longer. If I would say anything else, I would call this book a page-turner. Thank you Elizabeth Laird for writing Oranges in No Man’s Land. Will Ayesha make it? Would she and her family be reunited once again?________________________________________________________________________________4 StarsI liked this book but it was about girls and it should include more of Ayesha’s brothers. This book was quite sad and everyone should give respect to it. It was amazing about how brave and gallant Ayesha has been. It was a bit funny too – when Latif said ‘if I was there instead of you I would have been a heroine’.________________________________________________________________________________5 StarsAyesha is a beautiful girl who has sadly lost her mother. Gran gets poorly. It is so tense throughout the story and this book is very adventurous. If you love action and adventure then this book is definitely for you. I loved this book so much that I want to carry on reading. I think that Samar could be involved in the story a bit more.I would rate this book 5 out of 5.They are separated by the Green Line. Will she succeed? Will she be reunited with her father?________________________________________________________________________________5 StarsOranges in No Man’s Land is an amazing story, full of adventure, heroism, loyalty and war. In this heart-warming tale, a girl named Ayesha sets off on an astonishing journey through the forbidden and deserted no man’s land. The journey she sets off on is to find help for her poor and very ill granny, who has looked after them and treated her and her brothers like her own children. When she sets off on this epic journey she meets a handful of people. She travels with courage, bravery and, most important of all, fearlessness.I will give this book 5 out of 5 because it has plenty of adventure and occasionally a little touch of humour along with some sarcasm. Even though I do not really like this book, it is very adventurous and a little bit scary.Do you think she will make it? Find out in this partly true story!________________________________________________________________________________3 StarsI liked this book a little bit. The title was nonsense and there were hardly any oranges in it, so I’m giving this a 3.I’m giving a 3 because it was a little annoying because there was too many Ayesha words in it. But Ayesha is a very sweet and pleasant young girl, but I’m confused about no oranges in it.The book was about granny being sick but Ayesha, at 10 years old, going across the Green Line is dreadful.

Beautifully written
This is such a beautiful price of writing. My class read it last year and it was being referred to this year so I thought I should keep informed. So very glad I did and I’ve bought another book by the same author for my small reading group!
