Can this be used for preparing a surface for painting?

Not really sure what you mean by preparing, but this is just air in a can to shoot out dirt.

Ok to use 4 guitar electronics- safe for poly & lacq finishes? i always use crc elec cont. clean w/0 issues, but not tried this marine version.

This if for wiring and contacts, not cleaning objects but to prevent corrosion.

I always liked CRC products, my biggest concern does this tend to melt plastics?

I sprayed a generous portion of the CRC in the bottom of a hard maybe ABS plastic dust pan to see if it would soften the surface. I let the solution set for about two minutes and then took a Scotch Bright green cleaning pad and scrubbed the surface. I'm not sure that it softened the surface but it did clean it.
