What level of water change is required to activate the switch? I want to detect around a 1 cm increase in water level.

Hi - the switch opens on rising about 3mm from the bottom of the stem and closes on falling about 2mm from the that same point i.e. the hysteresis is about 1mm. The float travels about 11mm up the stem. If you are just measuring an 'overfill' then I would mount it so that the bottom of the stem is about level with the desired 'high water level' and make any incremental adjustments with a washer or shim under the mounting nut. BTW, the contacts are closed when the water level is low and open when the water level is high - although I suppose it could be mounted upside down if you can garuantee the rubber seal remaining leak tight. Please answer soon can this be used for a fuel tank (petrol)

I plan to use mine to disable the pond pump if the water level drops. It is described for use in water and I think anything rated for flammable liquid would be listed as such, the seal to the tank would also have to be gas proof I'd say and the one supplied is just an O-ring under compression. It mounts vertically as well so to detect a nearly empty tank it'd have to be immersed below the full fuel level and I'm not sure that the wire entry point, although sealed with a silicon type compound, would be proof against the petrol.
