SuperLex and the conundrum of Clark Kent. Intrigue, mystery, and ACTION!
I was concerned over DC hiring Jurgens when they announced him as writer of Action Comics for Rebirth. I think we can all agree that it seems that Jurgens will always have a job at DC, even though his relative recent history didn't produce the greatest products. However, I am thoroughly relieved to know that Jurgens is doing wonders with the Rebirth Action Comics title.Story: First off, I have to say after having read this book, that this particular volume comes off as strangely small on action for a book called "Action Comics", BUT in this case this is not by any means a bad thing. If you like character driven storytelling, mystery, intrigue, and suspense, with good action, then you'll probably love this volume! There's so much I loved about it. It starts off with a flashback from Justice League #52 from the New 52, which shows Lex returning from Apocalypse and narrating why he came back when he could have ruled countless worlds as the king of Apocalypse. One would think Lex insane for giving that up, and certainly pre New 52 Lex would've never passed on that opportunity, but we're dealing with a whole new Lex here, one that's had an incredible development of character since Forever Evil! All in all, as he narrates in his own mind his motivations for returning, we get to see him be more of a human character than he's been in a long time, and it fits with his new characterization of the "Superior Superman" which the letterer makes a subtle hint to (my hat's off to him). I'm loving the crap out of everything SuperLex!! We move onto the main story which has the human and powerless Clark Kent from volume 1 trying to break into Geneticron, a top secret corporation to find out their dirty secret(s), but the staff apparently has no qualms about killing him to protect those secrets. The story switches between the present (that night at Geneticron) and various points earlier throughout that day. It's well paced, easy to follow, well written, and very intriguing, almost like Clark is in a sort of spy thriller! Superman and Clark meet up and we finally get to see some of this mystery unravel a little bit as Superman uses a device on Clark in order to determine who he REALLY is. The whole time Clark and Superman are being watched by this mysterious guy who seems to be after Superman. It sets up volume 3, and I'm looking forward to that! The last two issues of this volume deal with Superman, Jon, and especially Lois and their family life as Lois looks to take up the life of her New 52 counterpart and return to the Daily Planet! This gives us some nostalgic moments like seeing Lois and Jimmy interact again, Lois telling off the oafish buffoon, Steve Lombard, which is just great! There's some great character work, and if Tomasi's Superman vol. 1 shows us anything, it's that seeing Superman's family life is writing gold! We also get closure on New 52 Lois with the help of Superwoman. Again, there's so much to love here; it's strange that this volume is actually kind of small.Art: I loved Tom Grummet's art from JL #52. He draws SuperLex so well! That final image of him at the top of the Daily Planet with the globe in the background was awesome! All the art in the book is great. Patrick Zircher has a great style. Stephen Segovia is great as well. I really liked all the art in this book, but the one artist who's my favorite on this title actually didn't do any of the art in this book; that is, Tyler Kirkham! I think he's the best artist on title, but he's not present here. Don't get me wrong, as stated, all the art is great, I just wish Kirkham would have done at least one issue. Clay Mann does most of the covers for this collection and his covers are just brilliant! I'm so glad DC still has him. They need to put this guy on a major title as an interior artist. Anyone who saw his art in Poison Ivy: Cycle of Life and Death knows that Clay Mann is a great talent!Overall: I actually loved this more than I thought I would. My initial concern was that Jurgens would write in a very 90s style. Don't know why I thought that way, as he's very recently written for DC (to mixed reviews). But, his work here in Rebirth has been solid gold. I enjoyed this volume more than volume 1, so that's good as it means the title is improving! I'm super excited for volume 3! This might go down as one of the great Superman runs many years from now, and we really shouldn't expect less from, yes, a legendary writer!

Better and Better!
I haven't got a whole lot bad to say about the recent Action Comics outings; this one in particular left me chomping at the bit for more. It pulls off the nifty feat of improving the previous instalment in retrospect; you get information and background that adds some context behind vol. 1's breathless smashing spree and makes it more than a constant melee of explosions and punches resembling what Michael bay sees during a wet dream. Vol 2. Is story driven, holding back on the pyrotechnics to set up a narrative, and a good one at that - the largely unaddressed mysteries in vol. 1 deepen and stretch, leaving exciting new directions to take the plot in. I'm loving the way it's written - Jurgens pens great dialogue and exposition here, fleshing out the relationships between Supes, his family and all the supporting characters, leaving you with an intriguing story populated with characters both believable and likable, with art that...well, there's the odd bit where things look a bit off, superman smiles in one particular panel and it reminds me of that part in Terminator 2 where the T-800 is trying to wrap it's robotic gob around a grin and it just isn't right man, but by and large it looks great.I'm psyched as all hell for the next chapter of Action Comics. Here's hoping it keeps up the steam.

there's a lot of talking but not Supes punching around bad guys. The first Rebirth Action comics was epic ...
The "action" is actually missing in this volume : there's a lot of talking but not Supes punching around bad guys. The first Rebirth Action comics was epic with the fight against Doomsday, but here, it's kind of boring.
