No, they are not authentic MUJI pens. If you want authentic ones instead, go to http://www.muji.us/store/stationery/pen-pencils/capped-gel-ink.html and purchase them directly from the MUJI store. You can tell they're not authentic by the labels. The authentic MUJI pens have a pink section and have a lot more Japanese writing. These labels are plain tan and only state "MUJI" in the Japanese characters.

0.5mm Is better or 0.38mm?

I only have 0.38mm. I don't know 0.5mm is better than 0.38mm, this is totally up to your taste.If you like thinner line, I will recommend you 0.38mm.

Why is the label not the same on the pen as the one shown in the picture?

Not sure what kind of labels you saw on the pens you have, but Muji have been start using some kind of new label several months ago.

Mine came loose in a mailing envelope with writing all over it. Is this normal? So much for it being part of a gift.

No. It came in proper packaging. Seems like an anomaly. I would return it and re-order.
