Brimstone and Treacle [DVD]

Originally, B and T was an English production in VHS and the ending scene had this terrific music with a Salvation Army Band doing "When the roll is call up yonder" and gradually faded to Sting's theme which I found absolutely mesmerizing. I ordered this dvd, not realizing that this B and T was a MGM production and the ending was replaced by another without the Salvation Army Band-Sting's theme. Got to check them production notes people!

Love this older movie of my favorite singer!!

This is a very underrated little film. Don't be scared away just because Sting is in it...he is actually very well cast here, having the perfect face for this quirkily creepy role. The plot raises many questions about whether the means sometimes justify the ends in life, and how sometimes good is spawned by the wicked. The dark, autumnal atmosphere, great title and closing graphics, and the strange twists of plot, leave one puzzled but pleased when all is said and done. The soundtrack is a bit mixed...some songs should've been left out, but many of the moodier pieces work quite well. I recommend this film highly!

Brimstone and Treacle 1982 - I loved this movie. Sting is very good in this movie as the devil's or perhaps the angel's advocate to help a family resolve their emotional problems. Sting's character, Martin Taylor, is the catalyst to help the Bates family expose their family secrets and bring their daughter Patricia back into the world from her self imposed hiding. She needed an emotional shock to bring her back to her family. This is the second version of this movie, with the first produced in the 1970s and banned by the BBC for about 15 years. This version is a little lighter but tells the story well.

Awesome movie

I tend to agree with the other reviews that are posted here,but I would like to make one distinction. I thought the movie had a truly unique "surprise" ending. ... Brimstone and Treacle is a great life lesson about learning to embrace adversity and taking responsability for your actions. I loved it, and I'm buying it so I can show it to my friends!

Very good drama. Bit disturbing in places. But enjoyed it.

One of Dennis Potters best stories turned into an enjoyable film, which to be honest I only went to see (way back when) because Sting was in it and I was a huge Police fan. Denholm Elliot and Joan Plowright shine in a creepy tale of lust, guilt and the supernatural. Sting is, er, less good but has moments. A film ripe for remake methinks...
