How does the flashlight turn on, and does it stay on until turned off or does it need to be held in place?

There is a button you press on the back end. Once pressed, the flashlight stays on until you press it again. You can feel it click. I like the design. (You do not have to hold the button down to keep it on.)

Can I attach it to a dog leash?

About an inch. They are small but super bright and convient.
