Just a great Jack London book.

Jack London has spent a lot of time with dogs (and wolves) and makes a convincing effort to give the animal's point of view based on what animals actually want and how they learn and change. This makes the story much stronger and more interesting than countless silly stories where the author puts human thoughts into animal characters. The story is pretty dark in parts, so may be unsuitable for very young children.
